|| of endangered species Appreciation and identification of Dendrobium bouquets, dendrobium fringedum and dendrobium crankshafts
Mr. Hanaki

In the native dendrobium varieties in China, there are many kinds of dendrobium with yellow flowers, and many flower color shapes are very similar, such as dendrobium yellow, dendrobium, etc., if you are not familiar with dendrobium, it is likely to be confused.
In order to let the majority of Dendrobium enthusiasts understand Dendrobium and be able to make simple identification distinctions, we will introduce the characteristics of various Dendrobium and compare the Dendrobium with similar morphologies, which is conducive to intuitive cognition and identification.
However, due to space limitations, we can only select two or three kinds of introductions at a time, some according to the similarity of the name, some according to the similarity of the flower color, and some according to the form is easy to confuse the comparison. Today,i would like to introduce to the flower lovers three kinds of dendrobium with similar morphology and color: dendrobium bouquet, dendrobium fringedum and dendrobium crankshaft.
Dendrobium chrysanthum Lindl.) has a thick, fleshy, droopy or bent stem, cylindrical, 50 to 200 cm long and 5 to 15 mm thick, with an upper part sometimes slightly bent, unbranched, and multi-segmented. The leaves are two columns, alternate on the entire stem, papery, oblong lanceolate. The umbel-shaped inflorescence is nearly spun without a peduncle, one for 2-6 flowers, and grows laterally on the upper part of the leafy stem; the flowers are yellow and thick in texture; the petals are slightly concave, inverted ovate, 16–22 mm long and 11–14 mm wide, rounded at the apex, fully margined or sometimes finely eroded, with 7 veins; the lip flaps are concave, unroped, kidney-shaped or transversely oblong; and each side of the lip disc is 1 maroon patch with a broad ridge extending from the base to the middle. The capsules are cylindrical in shape and flower from September to October. It is mainly distributed in Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan and southeastern Tibet, and grows on tree trunks in dense montane forests at an altitude of 700-2500 meters or on wet rocks in valleys.
Dendrobium fimbriatum Hook.), with a thick stem, oblique or drooping, hard texture, cylindrical or sometimes slightly spindle-shaped above the base, 50 to 100 cm long, 8 to 20 mm thick, unbranched, with most nodes. The leaves are two columns, leathery, oblong or oblong lanceolate. The inflorescence is 5–15 cm long, with 6–12 flowers; the flowers are golden yellow, thin in texture, unfolded, slightly fragrant; the petals are oblong and oval, 1.2–1.9 cm long and 7–10 mm wide, blunt at the apex, slightly eroded at the edges, with 5 veins; the lip lobes are darker than the sepals and petals, nearly round, 15–20 mm long, with purple-red stripes on both sides of the base and narrowed into claws about 3 mm long, with compound tassels at the edges. Flowering period is from April to June. Distributed in Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou and other places, it is produced at an altitude of 600-1700 meters above sea level in dense forests on tree trunks or on shady rocks in valleys.
Dendrobium gibsonii Lindl.), the stem is oblique or overhanging, hard texture, cylindrical, 35 to 100 cm long, 7 to 8 mm thick, the upper part is sometimes slightly curved, unbranched, with many nodes. The inflorescence is from the upper part of the old stem that has fallen leaves, often drooping; the inflorescence axis is dark purple, often curved, 15-20 cm long, sparsely grown a few to 10 flowers; the flowers are orange and unfolded; the petals are nearly oval, 1.4-1.6 cm long and 8-9 mm wide, blunt at the apex, fully margined, with 5 veins; the lip flap is nearly kidney-shaped, 1.5 cm long and 1.7 cm wide, the apex is slightly concave, and the base is narrowed into a claw. Flowering period is from June to July. It is found in Guizhou and Yunnan, where it grows on tree trunks in montane forests at altitudes of 800-1000 m.
Bouquet of dendrobium
Dendrobium fringed
Crankshaft Dendrobium
Dendrobium bouquet, dendrobium fringedum, dendrobium crankshaft are rare varieties of dendrobium, flowers are luxuriant, beautiful posture, elegant and generous, and have a slight aroma, so it has a high ornamental value and horticultural value, so it is loved by the majority of plant lovers.
The above three kinds of dendrobium, all of which are endangered and rare dendrobium species native to China, are listed in the "List of Wild Plants under National Key Protection (Second Batch)" (Discussion Draft), with the level of endangerment and the level of protection as national key protection. The main differences between them are as follows:
【Morphological differences】 Among the three dendrobiums, dendrobium bouquets are the longest, up to 2 meters, and dendrobium fringed dendrobium and crankshaft dendrobium are relatively short, but they are also longer than other dendrobiums. Usually up to 50 cm or more.
【Peduncle difference】Dendrobium bouquet of flowers has the longest peduncle, 3.5-6 cm; the inflorescence axis of Dendrobium fringedum is thinner, more or less curved, and the inflorescence stalk is 2-4 cm long; the peduncle of Dendrobium crankshaft is the shortest, 2.5-3.5 cm long, with obvious curvature.
【Flower differences】 Dendrobium bouquet flowers usually grow laterally in the upper part of the leafy stem, every 2 to 6 flowers for a bunch; dendrobium fringedum and dendrobium crankshaft are born in the upper part of the old stem of deciduous leaves, the inflorescence is long, more than 10 cm, and the number of flowers is often about 10.
【Flower shape difference】 The base of the petals of Dendrobium bouquet of flowers suddenly narrows into short claws, and each side of the lip disc has 1 maroon patch; the base of the dendrobium fringe has purple stripes on both sides and narrows, the edge has a compound tassel, the lip disc has a crescent-shaped transverse dark purple patch with short villi on top; the crankyle dendrobium lip disc has 1 round maroon or dark purple patch on each side, densely covered with fine papillary hairs, and the edge has short tassels. In addition, the upper part of the fringed dendrobium petals have slightly fine teeth, and the lip flap is nearly rounded; the crankshaft Dendrobium lip flap is nearly kidney-shaped.
【Flower color difference】Dendrobium bouquet flower color is light yellow; Dendrobium fringed dendrobium flower color is golden yellow; Dendrobium crankshaft flower color is orange yellow. However, the color difference is not so obvious, and due to different environments, there are differences in the color of the flower, which can only be used as a reference.
【Flowering difference】Among the three kinds of dendrobium, from the perspective of natural flowering, dendrobium fringedum flowering period is the earliest, in April to June; crankshaft dendrobium flowering period is in the middle, in June to July; Dendrobium bouquet flowering period is the latest, in September to October.
Dendrobium curved stem
Dendrobium longifolium
It is also important to note the difference between dendrobium fringedum and dendrobium longifolium, as well as dendrobium crankshaft and dendrobium curved stem, both of which are similarly named dendrobium species. The biggest difference between Dendrobium fringedum and Dendrobium longifolium is that the tassels of Dendrobium longifolium are longer, and the edge above the middle (especially the apex) has a long and branched fringe, which is longer than the lip petals; the biggest difference between Dendrobium querces and Dendrobium crankshasis is that the lower petals of Dendrobium quercus are yellow-green, and the upper part is nearly lilac, oval, and easy to identify.
The above is about the identification distinction between Dendrobium bouquet, Dendrobium fringed and crankshaft Dendrobium, as well as a little bit of the main features of Dendrobium quercus and Dendrobium longsu, hoping to help the majority of Dendrobium lovers to distinguish and identify, if there is something missing or doubtful, welcome to discuss, also welcome to correct, thank you!
