China Environment News丨 Qinghai: Key fish species achieve large-scale artificial breeding

The reporter recently learned at the Fishery Technology Extension Center of Qinghai Province that the key fish species living at an altitude of about 4800 meters at the source of the Yangtze River, the small-headed naked-rudder, after artificial insemination and hatching, 20,000 juvenile fry have grown well, which marks the successful large-scale artificial reproduction of key fish in the source of the Yangtze River in Qinghai, and for the first time realized the large-scale artificial reproduction of the world's highest distribution of key fish species at altitude.

Small-headed naked-headed schizojiri belongs to the cold-water fish, slow growth and development, growing to 50 cm long adult fish, generally takes more than 10 years, is a unique large and medium-sized fish in China, is also a key protected fish in Qinghai, is one of the key fish species in the Yangtze River source water ecosystem. In 2020, the Yangtze River Academy of Sciences broke through the artificial breeding technology of this species, and mastered the optimal sexual maturity time node of adult fish, the water temperature demand process of embryonic development and the key membrane water temperature. At the same time, the research team challenged the long-distance land transport of 20,000 piglets, and after 13 hours and 1,000 kilometers of uninterrupted transportation, the newborn fry were safely transported from the Zaduo base to Xining and farmed in the Provincial Fishery Technology Extension Center. The young fry that have undergone large-scale artificial breeding are currently swimming lively and growing well. In the next step, the Yangtze River Academy of Sciences will strengthen basic research and consolidate the research and protection of fish diversity in the source of the Yangtze River.
