An archaeologist using Google Earth to discover traces of three Roman military camps in the desert south of Jordan prompted a rethinking of the region's history.

Three ancient Roman camps in the Jordanian desert, probably built during a secret military mission in the second century AD, have found only a handful of Roman camps in the Middle East. Unlike as much in Roman territory in Europe, this discovery was an important advance in archaeology. The outline of the camp can be seen through Google Earth; No buildings or high walls remain. The camps are located in the desert, although tire marks show that several vehicles have been active in the area. Further investigation and aerial photographs by Google Earth indicate that the silhouettes are unique remains of Roman makeshift military camps, built by soldiers according to standard defensive plans and, in these cases, by rockfill.
