At about 14 o'clock on April 28, some people reported to the police that there was a big fish twisting its tail in the Dingba Beach, No. 1 Husturgeon Road, Chenjia Town, suspected of running aground, and requested the police for help.
The police of the Chenjiazhen Police Station of the Chongming Public Security Subbureau rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the police, and several people pointed a large black fish not far from the mudflats to the police. Realizing that it was most likely a national protected animal, the police called everyone to roll up their trouser legs and go into the water, trying to release the big fish into the deep water, not wanting to swim back to the beach with the tide several times in a row.
In order to prevent the big fish from being injured, the police quickly contacted the Shanghai Aquatic Wildlife Protection Research Center and asked to participate in the rescue. Experts arrived 15 minutes later and instructed the people present to carefully rescue the big fish from the stranded position using a special stretcher.
Experts determined that the 77-centimeter-long large fish was a national first-class protected animal, and the baby finless porpoise should have been separated from the mother of the finless porpoise in the river. According to experts, after birth, the baby finless porpoise should be nursed by the mother finless porpoise for a period of time, so she decided to release it immediately after the tide rose.
After 30 minutes, the baby finless porpoise was carefully placed in the tide outside the Ding Dam. After entering the water and circling, the finless porpoise swam far away, as if saying goodbye to everyone, and about ten minutes later, the finless porpoise swam into the deep water. Before leaving, experts told the police that they would come to the nearby waters to observe in the past few days, and if they saw the small finless porpoise returning, they would take the next step of protection.
It is understood that the Yangtze finless porpoise is the only existing freshwater finless porpoise in the world, which is the flagship species of aquatic life conservation of the Yangtze River and an important indicator of the health of the freshwater ecosystem of the Yangtze River, which has survived on the earth for 25 million years. Since the 10-year ban on fishing in the Yangtze River, the population of finless porpoises has begun to stop falling and rebound. According to the 2022 scientific expedition of the Yangtze finless porpoise in the whole basin organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the population of the Yangtze finless porpoise is 1,249.
