According to Agence France-Presse, Algeria's National Parks Service said a local naturalist photographed a Saharan cheetah for the first time in a decade, a critically endangered species on the IUCN Red List.

The park's chief, Salah Amokrane, told reporters that the Sahara cheetah was found in the vast desert south of the Hogar Mountain National Park.

Amokrane announced the news in a documentary released Monday about the work of park scientists, including cheetah photos taken at Atakol Volcano, whose peaks are nearly 3,000 meters high.

The appearance of the Saharan cheetah is very different from that of other African cheetahs. Its coat is shorter and lighter in color. Now, their range of activities is limited to the Sahara Desert and the Sahel, from Mali in the west to the Central African Republic in the east.

The subspecies last appeared in the Hogar Mountains between 2008 and 2010, when four were captured by cameras.

In 2012, the IUCN estimated that there were only 37 Saharan cheetahs left in Algeria.
