In the animal kingdom, birds and mammals attract the opposite sex through their melodious calls, and we humans develop this courtship call into a love song. Reptiles that lack vocal organs are usually very silent, but recent studies have found that a small crocodile living in the Cretaceous period is a master of singing love songs!

The little crocodile of the hillbilly

The Bauru Basin, located in southeastern Brazil, has found a large number of paleontological fossils, including many of the Cretaceous crocodiles.

In 2011, paleontologists Fabiano V. Iori and Ismar S. Carvalho named the caipirasuchus based on fossils found in the Bolu Basin, a genus name derived from the Portuguese word for "Caipira" (meaning "farmer, hillbilly") and the Greek word for "souchus" (meaning "crocodile"). The model species name of the farmer crocodile is Caipirasuchus paulistanus, and the species name comes from the place where its regular mold specimen was found.

After the establishment of the genus Crocodile, paleontologists named three other species based on fossils, with the second species, Caipirasuchus montealtensis, named in 2008. The orthodon specimen of the MontiAltu farmer crocodile, numbered MPMA 15-001/90, includes a complete skull and mandible fossil, which was found only 8 km from Montiarte, which is why it got its name.

Born for land

The farmer crocodile is a small crocodile with a body length of about 1 meter. Don't look at the farmer crocodile is very small, but the head is very large. They have a pair of large eyes on the big heads of the farmer crocodiles, so their eyesight must be good. The overall proportion of the head of the farmer crocodile is shorter and higher.

The farmer crocodile has a large mouth with two rows of sharp teeth in its mouth. Unlike the crocodile teeth we are familiar with, the teeth of the farmer crocodile are not conical, but flat and curved backwards, like the teeth of dinosaurs.
The farmer crocodile has a short neck and a strong body at the back, with skin-forming bones on its back and tail that can play a protective role. It had a longer tail behind the farmer crocodile, but this tail was also different from the tail of today's crocodiles, and the end of the tail was elongated, rather than widened and flattened.
The limbs of the farmer crocodile are on both sides of the body, and the limbs are surprisingly long, and they are basically perpendicular to the ground. The crocodiles we see today not only have short limbs, but also have a bow shape, so when on land, they crawl slowly on the ground with their belly. The farmer crocodile with its long legs is different, and they can run fast on the ground, just like dogs.

In the introduction of the farmer crocodile, it is not difficult to see that from the head to the teeth, from the tail to the limbs, the body structure of the farmer crocodile is very different from today's crocodiles, and the reason for this difference comes from their living environment. The farmer crocodile is a completely terrestrial prehistoric crocodile, so they no longer need to adapt to the body structure of aquatic life and become flexible and rapid chocobo crocodiles.

Living in the world of dinosaurs

Fossils of the farmer crocodile were found in the Adamantina Formation formation in Brazil, belonging to the Late Cretaceous period, dating from 90 million years ago to 68 million years ago. Judging from the stratum of the fossils found, the farmer crocodile should have lived between 90 million and 83 million years ago. Dinosaurs that lived in the same world as the farmer crocodile were Adamantisaurus, Aeolosaurus, Antarctosaurus, Gondwanatitan, Maxakalisaurus, and Pycnonemosaurus, which belonged to the theropod carnivorous dinosaurs.

The farmer crocodiles living with dinosaurs are under a lot of pressure, and they have to avoid the hunting of ferocious carnivorous dinosaurs and compete with small carnivorous dinosaurs. The small, flexible farmer crocodile wins with speed, is able to chase prey, and competes with dinosaurs for food. The recipes of the farmer crocodile include not only mollusks, insects, small lizards, but also newborn dinosaurs.

Judging from the fossils found so far, various small chocobo crocodiles, including the farmer crocodile, were still common in South America during the Cretaceous Period, which also proved the success of evolutionary strategies and adaptations to the environment.

Sing a Cretaceous love song

If you think that the farmer crocodile is just a small chocobo crocodile that lived in the Cretaceous Period, it is too small to look at it, and paleontologists have found that it can sing.

Thanks to the intact fossilized skull, paleontologists studied the specimen of the Monti Alto nongfu crocodile, numbered MPMA-68.0003 / 12, and found that there was a special cavity inside the pterygium of the skull. Using computed tomography, paleontologists restored the structure of the cavity, and the rest of the nasopharynx was connected, similar to the skull of the Ganges crocodile. The Yokogawa crocodile is able to attract the opposite sex by making sounds through the cavity connected to the nasopharynx by the wingbones, and the farmer crocodile can do the same. Paleontologists' study of more Monti Alto farmer crocodile skulls has found differences in cavities, which should be caused by age and sex.
