After more than 100 years of treatment, the Thames is no longer a "fetid river", and its water quality has been restored to its original appearance in the 17th century, once again reaching drinking water standards, and more than 100 species of fish have returned to it.

According to the cross-sectional monitoring of China's seven major water systems in 2001, only 29.5% of the water quality of Class III can enter the waterworks, while the water quality of Category 5 is as high as 44%; In addition, the pollution of shallow groundwater resources in China is relatively common, about 50% of China's shallow groundwater is polluted to a certain extent, and about half of the urban areas of urban areas are seriously polluted. Due to the indiscriminate discharge of industrial wastewater, more than 80% of surface water and groundwater are polluted.
In 2022, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment announced the national surface water environmental quality status.
From January to December, among the 3641 national surface water assessment sections in China, the proportion of excellent water quality (Class I.-III.) sections was 87.9%, up 3.0 percentage points year-on-year; the proportion of inferior V. sections was 0.7%, down 0.5 percentage points year-on-year. The main pollution indicators are chemical oxygen demand, permanganate index and total phosphorus.
Over the past two decades, under the vigorous supervision and active promotion of the Chinese government, China's water pollution situation has been greatly improved, but we have to admit that in some areas, water pollution is still one of the important factors affecting sustainable economic development and people's livelihood.
