Former owner of Newcastle: When Keegan left in 1997, Newcastle invited Ferguson to coach the team

The Mirror reported that former Newcastle boss Sir John Hall, 88, revealed that Newcastle had tried to invite Ferguson to replace Kevin Keegan in charge of the team.

Hall: "Kevin's work is hard to replicate, but Ferguson will do a good job, he's the best in the business. When Kevin left in 1997, we needed someone to keep the momentum going and the lads felt the team had a chance to sign Ferguson from Manchester United, where he had turned the tide and won a lot of trophies. Our former chairman, Freddy Shepherd, revealed why the team didn't agree with Ferguson. ”

"He told me 'Manchester United president Martin Edwards had obviously heard what was going on and he called and asked if I had anything to tell him like Ferguson? I was in a boat and almost fell into the water'. If we had managed to sign Ferguson at the time, he would have come to Coach Newcastle, which would have been great, but we didn't do too badly and we later approached Kenny Daglish to coach. ”

Ferguson's hair dryer model became a legendary disciplinary force at Manchester United, and few people were immune to his anger. In football journalist John Richardson's new book, Ferguson: Under the Hair Dryer, some players and coaching staff revisit their experiences with Ferguson.
