A resort space with natural villages, local customs and craftsmanship
SOM LAND
SHANGHAI AS A COUNTRY
"Loose and slow" is taken from the traditional Chinese color "wind into the pine slow", which is a warm green between the dappled gaps of the tree shadows. It is a state of relaxation and a slow pace of life.

Being close to nature is the source of transformation / Design Inspiration
Located on Chongming Island in Shanghai, SOM LAND is a resort space that combines local customs and craftsmanship with natural villages, and focuses on nature and humanistic customs in the overall space arrangement and planning. Facing the water on both sides of the site, adjacent to the rural life of Laoyang Port and Hongmei Road landscape rivers and nature, and surrounded by national shelter forests and rivers, how to properly integrate with the natural environment is one of the main considerations in the design.
The loose outdoor garden design is based on the style planning of the natural environment, and the concept of "low maintenance" and "natural growth of plants" is adopted in the construction of the garden. At the same time, two of the old houses standing, under the consensus of the manager of Songslow, the resort space was executed and designed in the form of a renovation project. The old house building originated from the house of the original village chief, and at the same time, because the local building regulations stipulate that the building renovation is based on the original building height and vertical shadow range, in this environment, we plan it as: a main building (accommodation building) with three floors; The other is an annex building with a one-story floor. The interior of the building was replanned by "increasing the number of floors", "adjusting the room layout", "staircase position", etc., while the exterior building was renovated for "roof", "window" and "exterior wall decoration".
Trade-offs for space rationalization / Design concepts
For designers, the renovation project in the space often requires more careful consideration, the original building has its own problems, the need to adjust the old and inappropriate space layout, and add new design methods to create a better overall visual and practical experience after the renovation, each step is a layer of challenges. Therefore, for "loose and slow", the main designer hopes to use "moderate moderation" as the main direction when renovating the two old buildings as a whole.

We first increase the use area to extend outward, using transparent glass as the material of the top surface of the extension area and folding doors, to achieve the purpose of space extension, and also directly bring light into the space. The most notable interior space is the brick fireplace placed under the curved bamboo steel, which in addition to providing a real heating function, each functional area is divided around the fireplace.

For the overall annex, the glass transparent structure on the top surface has the function of attracting light, and the visual sense of sunlight through the bamboo and steel curves also shows the warmth of the four seasons, which is a characteristic point that echoes the main building.

In the part of the main building, a total of 552 square meters of space mainly provides accommodation functions. The original floor is two floors, the feasibility is adjusted to three floors, the original division space single room area is too small, the room shape is narrow and long, and the original staircase its structural position, blocking the view of the national shelter forest, in the design and then adjust the position of the stairwell, it is placed in the middle of the north side of the building, maximize the optimization of the building's circulation and visual range, while the existing convex rectangular building structure balcony, can help to properly meet the needs of room area and layout, to achieve a balance in the number and size of rooms.

After we raised the main building by one floor and adjusted the position of the stairs, we wanted to extend sunlight to the rooms and spaces on the entire floor, so in addition to the sunny south side, the stairwell composed of transparent glass and steel frame structure at the top greatly allows sunlight to naturally pour into the space in the center of the building. The size and number of windows connecting the interior and the outside world in the original building have been preserved and organically distributed on the façade of the new building, preserving the visual symbolism of the old building.
In the annex building, the original building rationalizes the allocation of its space, the original building function is to use as a tool room, and the main functions of the annex after the renovation are as a kitchen, dining area, reception area and toilet.

The unique imprint comes from nature and local culture / Material & Environment friendly
Loose and slow, because the brand manager emphasizes the desire to present a natural and relaxed slow life, so that guests can feel the space environment of non-machine standardized production, so most of our material selection is mainly based on biophilic and sustainable materials, recycled bricks, wood after the demolition of the original building, natural clay, site branches, and old cloth with local characteristics of Chongming Island, as indoor and outdoor space and wall building materials.
The concave and convex texture of the exterior wall of the building is composed of recycled bricks cut according to the texture of Chongming old cloth, which seems to be in a different order, but produces its own arrangement logic, so the visual sense of sorting and stacking and the attitude of recycling are we hope to convey the protection of the environment and the temperature of the local culture of Chongming Island.

The use of reed poles as a roof is an old local construction process, and in the past, reed poles were an easy local material to collect for the local natural environment, and had the function of sheltering from the wind and rain. The bamboo is mostly used as a material choice for fences. Loose, but also chose to build the roof of the reed pole in the traditional manual bundling method, from the intuitive visual beginning to bring out the sustainable concept practice of the return of earth materials to nature, and the experience in geological simplicity to be expressed.
In terms of overall space, we hope that in addition to the planning of the renovation of the old house, supplemented by the use of appropriate local environmental protection materials, from the performance of large-scale use on the roof and exterior walls, to the recycled brick inlay treatment of the reception bar finish, we hope to provide people who walk into the "slow" vacation, and have a deeper understanding of the local style of the environmental atmosphere and the warm experience after the renovation of the old building.
