In 1969, Ōtaki formed the band Happy End, along with Haruto Hosono, Takashi Matsumoto, and Shigeru Suzuki. The band combines Western music with Japanese music, and some see it as the true starting point of Japanese rock music. Although positioned as a rock band, Happy End's style has already seen the beginning of City-Pop.
Happy End disbanded after releasing its second album, and the four members developed each. Otaki meets the musician Yamadaro, who is five years younger than him, and together they kick off the City-Pop era in Japan. His 1981 album A Long Vacation established city-Pop style and became a legendary work.
In 1995, when the second season of "Cherry Pills" was launched, Otaki Eiichi composed the opening song "Pleasant Premonition", which continued his laid-back, swinging signature style. He himself covered the song himself on his 2016 album Debut Again.
