One evening in late March, Lao Liu, a 52-year-old native of Shaoxing, was sent to the emergency department of the Qingchun campus of the First Hospital of Zhejiang University. More than ten years ago, when he was chatting with friends, he heard that making tea with gardenia has the effect of clearing heat and ephemeral fire, and can also promote gastrointestinal peristalsis, help bowel movements, and is a good health tea, so he immediately "arranged" it. Lao Liu is also a "long-term" person, like to do things unchanged, this gardenia "health tea" has been drunk for more than ten years, basically never interrupted.

Chief physician Zhang Bingling knew that in her decades of medical practice, this was another case of intestinal disease caused by long-term drinking of gardenia tea. Since 2018, the Department of Gastroenterology of the First Hospital of Zhejiang University has received several patients with the same habit of drinking gardenia tea and similar problems as Lao Liu.
"Gardenia blossoms, gardenias blossom blossom..." The gardenia used in Lao Liu's tea is the dry ripe fruit of the madder plant gardenia, which has the effects of relieving irritability, clearing heat and moisture, cooling blood and detoxification, reducing swelling and relieving pain [1]. As long as it is drunk correctly and reasonably, it is beneficial to the body. But Lao Liu's problem is that he drinks too much.
The main chemical components of gardenias include cyclic ether terpenes (gardenisides, etc.), monoterpenes (bitter saffron acid, etc.), diterpenoids (saffronic acid, etc.), triterpenoids (ursolic acid, etc.), flavonoids, polysaccharides, volatile oils and trace elements. 【2】
It is the geniposide (also known as "geniposide") component contained in gardenia, which can act on metabolites produced by HepG2 cells, and can cause dysbacteriosis of small intestine by causing toxic reactions, on this basis, it can further induce pathological changes such as mesenteric vascular fibrosis thickening, intestinal mucosal ischemia and ulcers. 【3】【4】
There are even pathophysiological studies that believe that IMP is a special type of coagulation necrosis of the mesenteric vein and its surrounding arterial muscular layer and intestinal wall muscular layer caused by long-term hypoxic damage of the mesenteric venous muscular, which is called "mummification", followed by pathological characteristic manifestations such as venous occlusion, muscular sclerosclerosis and calcification. 【5】
In domestic and foreign literature, it has been reported that long-term and excessive use of gardeniside can cause idiopathic mesenteric venous sclerosing colitis. [6] The patients were concentrated in East Asian countries such as China, Japan, and South Korea, and most of them had a history of close contact with the Chinese herbal gardenia [7].
The cause was found, and after a period of symptomatic treatment, Lao Liu's condition improved. Chief physician Zhang Bingling advised him to stop using gardenia tea, keep his stool smooth, and regularly review colonoscopy. Lao Liu also said: In the future, I will not dare to drink a large amount of gardenia tea for a long time!
Everything is moderate, and long-term drinking of Chinese herbal tea in large quantities needs to be cautious

The tea culture of the motherland is broad and profound, and Chinese herbal tea is loved by the people because of its unique health care, disease prevention and treatment methods, and is a bright pearl in the treasure house of mainland medicine.
Here, experts from the First Hospital of Zhejiang University emphasized that although Chinese herbal medicine soaked in water is good for the body, it is not suitable for everyone to drink, it is recommended to consult the Chinese medicine department of a regular hospital, choose tea according to your own physical constitution, and avoid "prescribing medicine for yourself"; Chinese herbal tea should not be drunk for a long time, after all, it is a medicine three points of poison, proper drinking can play a good health care purpose, but everything is too late, should pay attention to moderation!
