author:Shanghai mortals

Last time "Comprehensive ranking of Chinese dynasties, Qing Dynasty first" has been praised by many readers, from the perspective of reading / collection, the data is amazingly high, has exceeded 95% of similar works, indicating that it has been recognized, and now the ranking of the emperor is also the only topic that needs to be expanded separately in the last article, not much to say, let's talk.

In Chinese history, there have been more than 300 emperors. Among them, the emperors of the small dynasties accounted for the vast majority, and it was they who made it difficult to accurately calculate the number of emperors in China, and became an approximate number. The emperors of the nine great dynasties, because they are "connected to the world", are important and the focus of our discussion. Of course, the emperors of the small dynasties could not omit all of them, and choose the main part to be listed separately.

I roughly divided the emperors into seven levels. From low to high: bad emperor, inactive emperor, passing emperor, effective emperor, benevolent emperor, good emperor, best emperor.

Great Dynasty Emperors:

There were about 110 people (2 Qin, 28 Han, 4 Jin, 2 Sui, 21 Tang, 9 Song, 16 Yuan, 16 Ming, 12 Qing), who did not include emperors who established minor dynasties or remnant regimes after the fall of the dynasty.

These 110 people will also be crossed out: first, those who have not been pro-government because of their youth or illness; 2. Those who have served for less than one year; Third, the emperor before he entered the Central Plains (that is, the "era of the small dynasty"). Thus, there are 85 bits left.

Emperors of the Little Dynasty:

The emperors of dynasties, including those before the Great Dynasty came to power in the Central Plains (i.e., the "Small Dynasty Era"), generally speaking, did not have a direct impact on the political situation in China as a whole, so they could not be compared with the emperors of the Great Dynasty. Only the emperors of the small dynasty who reigned for more than 20 years are discussed here (they must be called "emperors", kings and lords are not included). A person who has been an emperor for so long must have some kind of value worth studying, and they should be allowed to "exchange time for space" and enter our field of vision with dignity. Wu the Great: Sun Quan

Regent:

The regent referred to here should be a figure who has truly achieved the title of the Lindynasty, rather than the "power tilting to the opposition" commonly referred to, and even does not include the ministers and auxiliary ministers whose authority exceeds that of the current emperor and can depose the emperor. Generally, those who can achieve this status are the Empress Dowager, Empress, Regent, and Emperor Taishang. Cao Cao was crowned King of Wei, and the real court at that time was Wei, not Han, that is, "establishing a separate central government", becoming the de facto emperor, and posthumously honored as Emperor Wudi of Wei. Wang Mang, on the other hand, became emperor during his lifetime.

The regents of the Great Dynasty reigned for more than a year and the Small Dynasty for more than 20 years, a total of 13 people.

Empress

The emperors and regents of all these large and small dynasties added up to 125 people.

The emperor of Wuwei

Emperor Xian of Han, Emperor Shu Han, Emperor Huai of Jin, Emperor Su, Emperor An, Emperor Zhaozong of Tang, Emperor Yingzong of Song, Emperor Qinzong of Song, Emperor Ding of Yuantaiding, Emperor Wenzong, Emperor Sizong; Qingxianfeng. 13 people in total.

Comment: Personal morality is not too bad, or although he has the heart to make good efforts, but due to the situation, he is forced to return to heaven and has no skills, and the emperor who does nothing. Most of them are the kings of the end and the death of the country.

Inactive emperors cannot be said to be bad emperors, and in many ways they are even better than emperors who have done. Many dynasties flourished by emperors who did something, and declined by emperors who did nothing. Inaction is not the cause of decay, but mostly the result of decay. Ming Sizong (Chongzhen) was a representative emperor of this category, who was ordained in the last days and knew that he could not do it. Although he is not a hero, he also has faults, such as Ling Chi's execution of the famous general Yuan Chonghuan, after all, he is still an emperor who knows how to work hard and is eager to cheer up. I don't believe that his ancestors, such as Fang Taizu Zhu Yuanzhang and Chengzu Zhu Di, will definitely do better than him.

Passing emperor

Emperor Ming of Later Liang, Emperor Suzong of Tang, Emperor Dezong, Emperor Wenzong, Emperor Wuzong, Emperor Daozong of Liao, Emperor Zhenzong of Song, Emperor Zhezong, Emperor Gaozong, Emperor Ningzong, Emperor Xia Chongzong, Emperor Renzong, Emperor Jin Zhangzong, Emperor Chengzu of Yuan, Emperor Yingzong, Qing Daoguang, Tongzhi; Empress Dowager Han Deng, Empress Dowager Liu of Song, Empress Dowager Gao. A total of 19 people.

Comment: There are gains and losses for the government, and there are no great deeds and no major mistakes, that is, the emperor with mediocre political achievements. Not harshly speaking, being a passing emperor is already very good.

An emperor with a cause

Qin Shi Huang, Han Gaozu, Emperor Wu, Emperor Wu of Jin, Emperor Taiwu of Northern Wei, Emperor Wen of Sui, Wu Zetian, Genghis Khan, Yuan Shizu, Ming Taizu, Chengzu; After Han Lu, Cao Cao, Qingdolgon. A total of 14 people.

Comment: He has established great feats, such as a new dynasty, or expanding the territory, sweeping away the masses, unifying the ministries, the Central Plains and even the whole country, or creating and maintaining a fairly long era of peace, but the emperor who used troops too cruelly and violently, killed too heavily, and was not close to people. Most of them are the founding kings of the country.

The significance of the actions of this type of emperor is mostly for history. Living under an "active emperor" was often extremely painful. Many of his contemporaries became victims of what they did. First, the "emperor" has achieved ten thousand bones. There were no such emperors in the Song Dynasty.

To have a deed, you must have great talent, know people well, and have a stoic and resolute character, most of these emperors are tyrants, fortunately violent and not faint, and have done something, so that they are not listed in the category of bad emperors. Their lives and deeds have been fully described by historians, and I do not want to comment on them

Merciful emperor

Emperor Hui of Han, Li Xiong of Cheng Han, Yaoxing of Later Qin, Emperor Wudi of Liang, Emperor Gaozong of Tang, Emperor Ruizong, Emperor Xingzong of Liao, Emperor Renzong of Song, Emperor Shenzong, Emperor Renzong of Yuan, Emperor Hui of Ming, Emperor Xiaozong, Jiaqing of Qing, and Guangxu. A total of 14 people.

Comment: Although he did not make major achievements in his reign, he was very benevolent in government and cherished his talents and loved the people. Most benevolent emperors valued people's livelihood more than power, and appeared weaker. He may disappoint you, but he will never make you terrifying and miserable, will not make you feel "like a tiger", will not cut off your head for small mistakes or just to see you unfavorably. Although China has always advocated Confucian "ren", in fact there are very few benevolent monarchs. Of course, the benevolence mentioned here is not exactly equivalent to the Confucian "benevolence" and the Buddhist "kindness". Liberalization at home and good-neighborly intersection with the outside world; Yu Gong is not strong and competitive, and Yu Private is tolerant and self-contained. As far as the emperor is concerned, "acting" is precious, but "kindness" is especially rare. This is the main reason why I put "kindness" over "doing something."

Emperor Renzong of Song should be the representative of this type of emperor, and he is known in history for his leniency to his subordinates. The emperors of the Northern Song Dynasty were also the most benevolent of the previous emperors, basically not killing meritorious figures, not killing literati, and not killing ministers.

A benevolent emperor does not necessarily do nothing. The rule of Huang Lao during the period of Emperor Hui of Han, the rule of Tianjian in the early 30 years of Emperor Wudi of Liang, the rule of Yonghui in the era of Emperor Gaozong of Tang, and Emperor Renzong of Song's support for Wang Anshi to change the law are all good examples. It's just that they are constrained by the environment, unable to break free from the shackles of intricate political relations, or their own courage and ruthlessness are insufficient, and they have not been able to achieve greater success.

Excellent emperor

Emperor Wen of Han, Emperor Jing, Emperor Xuan, Emperor Ming, Emperor Zhang, Emperor He, Emperor Wu, Former Qin Fujian, Emperor Wen of Liu and Song, Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei, Emperor Gaozu of Tang, Emperor Xuanzong, Emperor Xuanzong, Emperor Taizu of Liao, Emperor Taizong of Song, Emperor Xiaozong, Emperor Shizong of Jin, Emperor Xuanzong of Ming, Shunzhi of Qing, Yongzheng, Qianlong; Empress Dowager Feng of Northern Wei, Empress Dowager Xiao of Liao, Empress Dowager Ming Zhang, and Cixi of the Qing Dynasty. A total of 26 people.

Comment: The emperor who created the reigning world and prosperous era, or swept away the heroes and ended the chaotic era, or opened up the territory to pacify the four sides, or supported the crisis of the Zhongxing dynasty, or made great efforts to achieve success in the reform of governance, the credit is far greater than the fault. A good emperor must possess some or even more good qualities of a statesman, such as extraordinary intelligence, perseverance, superior strategy, magnificence, and shrewdness. Good emperors also have achievements, but they are not so cruel and lascivious, and they do not have so much killing spirit. They may make mistakes, especially in later life, and some mistakes are fatal and irreparable. But we should be able to forgive him for his achievements relative to what he has built, especially in the context of the overall historical context.

Emperor Xuanzong of Tang reigned for 45 years, experiencing two eras, the former being the 30 years of the reign of Kaiyuan and the latter being more than 10 years of the Tianbao Rebellion. In any case, the merit of this emperor is great, and although there are such major mistakes as his later years, the prosperous era he created has left an extremely glorious mark on history. There is no need to elaborate on the strength and prosperity, just the fact that only 24 people committed crimes in the country in the 18th year of the first century can illustrate what the social livelihood was like at that time. If it weren't for the Tianbao Rebellion, his status would have even surpassed that of his great-grandfather Tang Taizong.

Another emperor comparable to Emperor Taizong of Tang was Jin Shizong. He often gathered the ministers on the left and right to discuss the successes and failures of the emperors of the past, and every incisive opinion and question and answer of the monarchs were very similar to those recorded in the "Zhenguan Politician". He didn't even make any big mistakes, left no regrets worth saying. He reigned for 28 years, the first five years of the crusade against the Liao and Southern Song Dynasties, and the last 23 years of basically no war in peace, quite similar to the 23 years of Zhenguan rule after Emperor Taizong of Tang. He also has the title of "Xiao Yao Shun". It's just that although it is small, it is "Yao", and although "Yao" is small. He should be the best emperor in this rank.

The most likely to cause controversy is Cixi. She was the longest-reigning regent in Chinese history, living well into the twentieth century. Modern Chinese still have vivid memories of her later years, and it is difficult to have any good feelings. Some people even put it in the category of "bad emperors" in their early impressions. It's actually not right. After Cixi came to power, the Taiping Rebellion and turmoil in the inner peace, resisted the intrusion of Western powers from the outside, painstakingly made plans, and operated dismally, stopping the political decline that began during the Daoguang and Xianfeng years, and Chinese society once appeared a peaceful scene of people's livelihood and stability, that is, the so-called "Tongzhi Zhongxing".

In the late Chinese dynasties, there was no emperor or regent who could do as well as her. She ceded a Taiwan, but maintained the basic integrity of the huge Chinese territory that even the Republic of China government could not keep. She has made many mistakes, but her credit cannot be erased. Cixi was not as brutal as depicted in some movies and novels, she was meritocratic and used a large number of famous Han courtiers. She staged both coups out of necessity, limited her reach to the court, and killed no more than a few people. The killing of Concubine Zhen was an emergency treatment that caused the eunuchs to be thrown into the well to avoid humiliation when foreign troops were about to enter the city, and Concubine Zhen refused to leave. History books record that his brutality was the killing of small eunuchs, and from the point of view of the Chinese royal family, eunuchs were "house slaves", and punishment and treatment could naturally be harsh, even as they pleased. Although this is also inconsistent with modern notions of human rights. She did not treat other subjects in this way, let alone abuse it. After the coup d'état, she also repented and began to partially implement the New Deal, which in fact paved the way for the peaceful withdrawal of the Qing Dynasty from the historical stage.

The best emperor

Emperor Guangwu of Han, Emperor Taizong of Tang, Emperor Taizu of Song, Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty

Commentary: The emperor who has great talents, magnificence and foresight of great statesmen, diligence and thrift, benevolence and love for the people, political clarity, and the foundation of creating a grand and benign operation for future generations, and martial arts.

There are only four of the best emperors, and it is worth commenting on them one by one.

Liu Xiu, the emperor of Han Guangwu, was very benevolent and generous, which was extremely rare among the founding kings of the previous dynasties. The founders killed multiple times, and it seemed that not killing was not enough to establish the national prestige of the new dynasty, so first they killed the enemy, and then they killed the heroes. Liu Xiu broke this evil law. He built the country with martial arts, but he attached great importance to civility, sympathized with the hardships of the people, advocated thrift, and rewarded the festival, and was called the "most humane" emperor by historians. His lack was that Zhongchang attendants all changed to eunuchs, burying the hidden danger of eunuchs gaining power in the late Eastern Han Dynasty.

Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin, passed down to the world with his Mingjian. In ancient times, the monarch was a social system and a great power in the military and government, and the most rare thing was to "listen to both", including listening to opinions that opposed themselves and were proved to be opposed by practice, including opinions that confronted you in public and told you that you can't get off the stage. The Reign of Zhenguan makes the best footnote to a certain range of "freedom of speech." His stain is the change of Xuanwu Gate, which seized the imperial throne by such a despicable means as a sudden attack and murder of an innocent brother.

The Song Dynasty was a dynasty without eunuchs wielding power and foreign officials chaotic government, the dynasty with the most respect for intellectuals, the most frugal dynasty in the imperial palace, the dynasty with the fewest killings of ministers, and the dynasty with the fastest development of science and technology. All this has a great relationship with the strategy set by Song Taizu Zhao Kuangyin when he founded the country. Zhao Kuangyin's personal character is also worthy of praise, and the story of "sending Beijing Niang for a thousand miles" was once well-known. His mistakes were still strategic, resulting in the characteristics of the Song generation of weak soldiers and major generals and political restraint.

Kangxi was the best emperor of the four, the so-called "Emperor of the Ages". Not only China, but the supreme ruler of the entire world, from emperors to presidents, I don't know who else has done better than Kangxi. His military victories surpassed the martial arts of successive emperors except Genghis Khan, and Genghis Khan was no match for him in calmly using troops and consolidating victories; The prosperous era he created, whether pompous or long-lasting, is far from comparable to any reign in the past. He gathered almost all the virtues of all the good emperors in China, and rarely made the same mistakes as them. He made many southern tours, and once braved the bitter cold wind, walked more than ten miles on the rugged path to the front line of the river control project, muddy and kneeless, and the local officials accompanying him were discouraged. He was even the most learned emperor and the longest-reigning emperor.

Up and down 5,000 years, spanning 70,000 li, within this ring, through the long-term evolution of time and space, everything is boundless. According to the history of the imperial system, there are about 260 emperors, among whom there are many who can be called the British lord and king, and those who really open up the territory and conquer external troubles and have made outstanding achievements are indeed rare.

Commentators take the Qin Emperor Han Wu as a model. Although the Qin Emperor had the merits of opening the Five Ridges in the south and chasing the Xiongnu in the north, he also had the harshness of burning books and pit Confucianism, paying taxes and conscription, and even built the disturbance of Afang, and it was difficult to judge whether the merits were right or wrong; Emperor Wudi of Han came to power in his early years, ruled martial arts, and was in power for a while, expeditioned to the Xiongnu in the north, took Minyue in the south, and conquered Korea in the east, expanding the territory of early China; In terms of cultural rule, deposed hundreds of schools, commended Confucianism, set it as one, opened the path of writing, cherished the old age for immortality, asked the immortals to enter the fangshi, built a palace room, to be fair, it seems to have white jade flaws. In a word, he opened up the territory, expanded the territory, and ruled the martial arts, all of which had meritorious achievements, and the sacred deeds were enough to be a model, and his greatest achievement, in order to eradicate long-term external troubles and make the five ethnic groups harmonious, was the Kangxi Emperor, the holy ancestor of the Qing Dynasty.

According to calculations, from the Yellow Emperor Xuanyuan to the Qing Dynasty's Xuantong Emperor Puyi, a total of 397 emperors and 162 kings appeared in China.

Throughout ancient Chinese history, the Kangxi Emperor can be regarded as one of the few outstanding ancient saints and Ming monarchs, he himself has a generous personality, diligent and loving the people, modest and prudent, heroic, vigorous, good at governance, good at work, inner saints and foreign kings, and less the poor military martial arts of emperors such as Han Wudi Qin Shi Huang, less favored Buddha such as Wu Zetian and Song Zhenzong, Liang Wudi, less Qin Shi Huang Han Wudi Tang Taizong, less Han Gao Emperor Ming Taizu's indiscriminate killing of innocents, less Qin Shi Huang Sui Emperor Sui Emperor cruelty and tyranny, less Tang Xuanzong, less Tang Xuanzong, Emperor Gaozong of the Qing Dynasty did not listen to and believe partially, did not doubt his beliefs, had a clear understanding of himself, his life, and his subjects, and achieved the traditional Confucian imperial standard of "inner saint and outer king" to the extreme, which can be regarded as a model of imperial morality through the ages.

However, during his reign, due to objective reasons, there was a lack of international exchanges, several literary prisons due to Manchu-Han contradictions, and the lack of science and technology due to sauce tank culture. It should be pointed out that while Chinese society in the Kangxi period was moving towards prosperity, it also contained new hidden worries, mainly in three aspects: first, political corruption; the second is the succession of the supreme ruling power; The third is the aggression of Western colonial forces. As an emperor, as a feudal monarch under an autocratic system, it is not an exaggeration to call Kangxi the best emperor of the ages in terms of character alone, and it is not an exaggeration to call Kangxi the best emperor of the ages in terms of political achievements.
