Ge Hong: Immortal alchemist, thousands of years after the death of the immortal, the god helped Tu Youyou in the air and won the Nobel Prize

In 283 AD, Ge Hong was born in Jurong, Jiangsu.

His grandfather was a prince and young master of the Wu State during the Three Kingdoms period, and his father was a taishou of the Jin Dynasty.

As a child of a family of officials and eunuchs, Ge Hong was immersed in reading classics such as the Analects, the Book of Poetry, and the I Ching.

Unfortunately, my father died at the age of 13, and a fire wiped out all my savings.

Ge Hong studied harder, determined to be a Confucian like his ancestors and restore the glory of the family.

The family was surrounded by walls, and they could only cut wood and sell it to buy pen and ink.

Copy a piece of paper on both sides until it is no longer usable.

There is no money to buy books, so I can only borrow books to study, and so on.

At the age of 16, Ge Hong bid farewell to his mother and went to Maji Mountain, Anhui Province, to worship Zheng Yin, who was in his 80s, as a teacher.

Zheng Yin's teacher is Ge Xuan, who is also the ancestor of the Ge Hong family.

Ge Hong followed Zheng Yin to learn Confucian medical classics and riding archery.

Among the students, Ge Hong is the youngest.

But he is the hardest working and obedient, and Master likes him the most.

Zheng Yin identified Ge Hong as his heir and passed on alchemy to Ge Hong.

In recent years, it has laid a solid foundation for Ge Hong to seek medical treatment.

From Master, he realized:

The goal of life should not be limited to fame, but to pursue the truth of life.

In 303 AD, natural disasters were frequent, local rebellions began, and war spread.

The 21-year-old Ge Hong returned to his hometown and began a military career.

With his outstanding mind and strong martial arts, he made a lot of battle merits and was named "General Fubo".

After several years of conquest, Ge Hong witnessed life and death and dynastic corruption.

Therefore, staying away from the powerful, practicing medicine to save people, and pursuing the road of life have become his firm choice.

In 306 AD, Ge Hong was 23 years old and came to Luofu Mountain in Guangdong for the first time.

Luofu Mountain is one of the ten famous mountains of Taoism, located in Boluo County, Huizhou, Guangdong, known as the "first mountain in Lingnan", is a key scenic spot and summer resort.

At this important moment in his life, he was determined to do three things:

Cultivation in the mountains, writing books and teachings, and using medical skills to benefit the people.

Once he passed by a house, went in to borrow water to drink, heard the farmer coughing, and diagnosed it as a cold wind.

So take local ingredients, use scallion tempeh decoction, the farmer drinks it and sweats, and soon it will be good, this is the green onion soup invented by Ge Hong.

One night, the villagers looked for him to enter the village, and many villagers had ulcerated skin and severe pain in their bones, but they could not find the cause.

This disease began with a red-red rash, which developed quickly, was terrible, and terrifying.

The next day, Ge Hong looked closely and found tiny bugs on the patient's skin.

So he picked out the worms with a needle, put ten pieces of garlic in hot ash, and applied them to the affected area.

The patient gradually improved, and Ge Hong's reputation for superb medical skills disappeared.

It turned out that the climate in Lingnan was humid and hot, and the miasma was pervasive with worm snakes, which was the earliest scrub worm disease.

Gehong's case predates the 1878 record of American doctor Pam by more than 1500 years.

At that time, Nanhai Taishou Bao Liang appreciated Ge Hong very much, so he gave his daughter Bao Guxu to Ge Hong.

Aunt Bao is many years younger than Ge Hong, but the couple share common interests and hobbies.

This immortal couple collected medicine in the mountains together to treat diseases for the people, and Bao Gu was good at moxibustion to treat skin diseases.

Ge Hong believes that mugwort is easy to obtain and moxibustion is easy to learn, so it is necessary to carry moxibustion forward.

Bao Gu is also the first female acupuncturist in the history of mainland medicine, and one of the four great female doctors in ancient times.

While providing free medical consultations for the villagers, Ge Hong compiled the book "Yuhanfang".

This 100-volume curative book proposed that the medicine for the people should be affordable and cheap.

He combined his daily diet and advocated the idea of dietary therapy, creating a precedent in Lingnan medicine.

In 316, the Western Jin Dynasty collapsed, and the 34-year-old Ge Hong returned to his hometown of Jurong and was given the title "Marquis of Guannei".

In 317 AD, Ge Hong sorted out his experience of seeking medical treatment for many years and completed his magnum opus "Holding Puzi".

"Holding Puzi" is divided into an outer part and an inner part, the outer part talks about the principles of the world and Confucianism, and the inner part collects the thoughts and fangshu of the Warring States Qin and Han immortals.

In 330 AD, in order to avoid disturbances, 48-year-old Ge Hong moved his family south and came to Luofu Mountain again to settle for the rest of his life.

In the Yuan dynasty painter Wang Meng's "Ge Zhichuan Migration Map", Ge Hong walks in front and Bao Gu rides a bull and holds a child.

A few domestic servants carried luggage, dogs, and birds and headed south together.

Doctor Ge returned to Luofu Mountain to establish a dojo and became the first grandmaster of Lingnan Taoism.

More than half a hundred years old, he made another important decision.

He compiled his years of experience in practicing medicine into a simple and inexpensive "Elbow Reserve Emergency Formula".

If "Holding Puzi" is the value of Tao, then "Elbow Reserve Emergency" is the methodology of the technique.

And it was this book that inspired Tu Youyou to successfully extract artemisinin to effectively treat malaria.

In 2015, Tu Youyou won the Nobel Prize in Medicine, the highest award won by the Chinese medical community.

At the most difficult time of the experiment, Tu Youyou experienced more than 190 failures, and could not extract artemisinin by high-temperature heating.

On the verge of despair, she re-read Ge Hong's "Elbow Reserve Emergency":

"One grasp of Artemisia annua, stain it with two liters of water, twist the juice, and take it all."

The meaning is: once you hold Artemisia annua, soak it in cold water, pound it into a paste and drink it directly.

Using low-temperature extraction, instead of high-temperature heating, this cold treatment method brought Tu Youyou hope for success and finally won the Nobel Prize.
