After active discussions with the club's board, Rafa Benitez is about to take over as Everton director.

Sky Sports News picked up Spaniards from Who have been unemployed since leaving Chinese side Dalian Yifang in January, the first decision of Everton's progressive system last night.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea manager is on the verge of returning to the Premier League two years after leaving Newcastle United.

Everton also spoke with former Wolves head coach Nuno Espirito Santo about becoming Carlo Ancelotti's replacement, while David Moyes was also considered the leader before striking another deal with West Ham.

After a year and a half at Goodison Park, Ancelotti recently left his chief coaching position and returned to Real Madrid. He led the Toffees to a tenth set in the Premier League this season.

Benitez dealt with Everton rivals Liverpool from 2004 to 2010 and won the Champions League, FA Cup and European Super Cup during his time at Anfield.

In 2012, he joined Chelsea on an intermittent basis and went on to win the Europa League and lead the Blues to a third set in the Premier League that season
