The King of Fighters (KOF) is a fighting game series produced by the Japanese game company SNK (now SNK Playmore). Since 1994, a number of works have been released.
- The King of Fighters '94 (1994): The first work, originally set as an all-star fighting game, brings together characters from SNK games such as "Legend of the Hungry Wolf" and "Fist of the Dragon and Tiger". With a 3-on-3 battle mode, each team has 3 characters, and after one defeat, the other member continues to fight.
- The King of Fighters '95 (1995): Added new characters, as well as the ability to freely combine characters. The story begins around the mysterious Yagami-an.
- The King of Fighters '96 (1996): Multiple new characters added, character skills and systems improved. The story continues to focus on the legend of Yagami-an and the King of Fighters.
- The King of Fighters '97 (1997): New characters and improved combat system. The plot centers on the fateful battle between Yagami-an and Kusanagi-kyo.
- The King of Fighters '98 (1998): As "Dream Match," this work does not have a clear plot, but instead brings together characters from previous titles. The game system and balance have been further improved.
- The King of Fighters '99 (1999): Introduced the "Support Characters" system, allowing four characters to team up. The plot begins with the "NESTS Chronicles" chapter.
- The King of Fighters 2000 (2000): Continued character expansion and fine-tuning of the game system. The plot continues with the "NESTS Chronicles" chapter.
- The King of Fighters 2001 (2001): Ben is the last installment in the NESTS chronicle, and the story gets a happy ending.
- The King of Fighters 2002 (2002): Similar to The King of Fighters '98, with no clear plot. The game system is further optimized and balanced.
- The King of Fighters 2003 (2003): Marking another change in the King of Fighters series, the adoption of the TAG system, which means that characters can be changed at any time during a fight. The plot introduces the legend of the "power of sealing gods".
- The King of Fighters XI (2005): The character lineup was further expanded using the TAG system. The game system has been improved, providing richer combat strategies. The plot revolves around the power of sealing gods.
- The King of Fighters XII (2009): As a reboot of the series, this game features a new 2.5D graphics style. However, due to problems with the number of characters and the game system, the response was relatively muted.
- The King of Fighters XIII (2010): The game improves on the shortcomings of the XII, with an increased number of characters and improved graphic detail. The plot revolves around the legend of the "evil gods", the sons of the dark asuras. The game has been well received by players and critics alike.
- The King of Fighters XIV (2016): The first work to feature a 3D model with a total of 50 characters. The game system and combat mechanics have been adjusted. The plot revolves around the legend of the "God of Light and Darkness".
- The King of Fighters XV (2022): This game improves on the XIV to improve the quality of graphics and the smoothness of character movements. The game system has been further optimized and the character lineup has been richer. The plot continues the story line of XIV.
In addition, the King of Fighters series has many spin-offs, such as KOF Maximum Impact and The King of Fighters: The King of Fighters Destiny (KOF: Destiny) and so on. These works innovate on the original and bring more surprises to the King of Fighters world.
