Feng Kármán three excellent Chinese students, besides Qian Xuesen, there are two, do you know?

author:Yoyo history

Von Kármán, the greatest aerospace engineer of the 20th century, has been hailed as the "scientific wizard of the aerospace age." Perhaps most people know that this wizard in the aerospace industry is because of the name of Qian Xuesen's mentor, in fact, not only Qian Xuesen worships under his protégé, but also many Chinese science everyone has studied under Feng Kamen. The core strength of the new China's aviation industry should be known to everyone, they are Qian Xuesen, Qian Weichang, Guo Yonghuai, it can be said that it is because of the help of Feng Kármán that a solid foundation has been laid for the space industry of New China.

Among von Kamen's many Chinese students, Qian Xuesen and his relationship are the deepest, the two of them are also teachers and friends, in Qian Xuesen's eyes Feng Kármán is his respected teacher, in the eyes of Feng Kamen, Qian Xuesen is his Chinese friend. After Qian Lao obtained a master's degree in aeronautics from MIT, he came to California Institute of Technology, where Qian Lao met his mentor Feng Kamen, that is, here Feng Kamen provided Qian Lao with two optional research topics, at the forefront of the content, high-speed flight and pointed out the direction for Qian Xuesen's aviation theory research.

Qian Lao received a double doctorate in aviation and mathematics from California Polytechnic University, and also co-proposed the "Carmen-Qian formula" with his supervisor. On the recommendation of von Kármán, he was recommended to participate in military secret work in the United States. During the days when Qian Lao studied and worked in the United States, he quickly became an excellent aerodynamicist with the help of von Kármán, and Qian Lao could become the founder of the new China's national defense aviation, and Feng Kármán can be said to be the biggest "hero".

In 1942, von Kármán had another Chinese student under him, Qian Weichang. Qian Weichang was admitted to the Department of Physics of Tsinghua University in 1935, and in 1939 he was admitted to the Gengzi Reparations to study elasticity at the University of Toronto, under the tutelage of Professor Xin Qi. At the University of Toronto, Qian Weichang and Professor Xin Qi compiled their research results in an article and submitted them to the collection of papers by von Kármán, the head of the Department of Aeronautics at California Institute of Technology, and this article gave von Kármán a deep impression. After receiving his doctorate in applied mathematics in 1942, Qian Weichang transferred to California Polytechnic University, and because of the previous article, von Kármán happily accepted this excellent student. In May 1946, Qian Weichang returned to China, and in 1956, he and Qian Xuesen founded the Institute of Mechanics and the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, training a large number of excellent dynamics workers for China.

In 1941, von Kármán welcomed another outstanding student, Guo Yonghuai. Guo Yonghuai, like Qian Weichang, received the Gengzi reparation in 1940 and went to study in the Department of Applied Mathematics of Dorunda University in Canada. In 1941, Guo Yonghuai and Qian Xuesen became the disciples of the world master of gas mechanics, Feng Kamen. In 1945, Guo Yonghuai completed an excellent thesis on "discontinuous solution of transonic flow", obtained a doctorate, and served as a professor of aeronautics at Cornell University. In June 1956, he received a letter from his brother Qian Xuesen, and the day before the National Day in 1956, he embarked on his way back to China. He was also arranged to devote himself to the scientific and technological leadership of the newly established Institute of Mechanics in China together with Qian Xuesen and Qian Weichang, and made outstanding contributions to the "two bombs and one satellite".
