Xiu Zongdi was born in 1939 in a large courtyard house in Beijing, his father was a businessman, and Xiu Zongdi had 7 brothers and sisters. Xiu Zongdi attended primary school in Beijing and transferred to Tianjin after liberation. After junior high school, he returned to Beijing until he graduated from high school. In 1958, he entered the Beijing People's Art Theater. After entering the Beijing People's Art Theatre, he began to appear in a series of drama works.
In 1965, he starred in "Red Locomotive" and received a warm response, and later participated in works such as "Live Like Him" and "Cotai Strip". After the Cultural Revolution, he continued to devote himself to drama performances, including "Dan Xin Spectrum" in 1978.
In 1981, he starred in his first film work "Xi'an Incident", playing He Yingqin, a first-class general in the Army of the Republic of China.
In 1984, he played the royalist Kang Youwei in the historical theme TV series "The Last Emperor".
