Raphael: Louis van Gaal had an argument with Rivaldo at Barca and is said to have hated Brazilian players ever since

According to the Daily Mail, former Manchester United defender Rafael was recently interviewed, claiming that Van Gaal had bluntly asked him to leave Manchester United because he "hated" Brazilian players.

Raphael made no secret of his conflict with Louis van Gaal, who had previously called him one of the "worst" coaches he had ever worked with. In the season before Louis van Gaal took office, Raphael was a fairly consistent starter at Manchester United, but in the 2014-15 season when Louis van Gaal was in charge, Raphael's first-team appearances were reduced to just 11. Louis van Gaal made it clear early on that Raphael was not on his plans and sold him to Lyon in 2015, ending the Brazilian's seven-year Manchester United career. Raphael's twin brother Fabio also left the Red Devils in 2014, when Louis van Gaal took over from Manchester United.

Raphael said Van Gaal had an opinion about himself because of his nationality, saying he hated working with Brazilian players after clashing with Rivaldo during his first time at Barcelona.

Raphael told The Athletic: "I never got an explanation, when Van Gaal came to Manchester United, he just said 'OKAY, you go', he came to Manchester United with the idea of players he wanted and didn't want and immediately set about making changes. He never explained it to me. But I've heard some explanations from other people, and even before he came, everyone told me that Van Gaal hated Brazilians. ”

"I don't know if that's true, but I heard it started with Rivaldo, when Louis van Gaal was also Barca's head coach, and he put Rivaldo on the bench and Rivaldo started saying bad things about him and wanted him to leave. Since then, it is said that Van Gaal has begun to hate Brazilians and think that 'those Brazilians like to drive out the manager', and things like that. ”

Rivaldo and Van Gaal worked together at Barca from 1997 to 2000, but their opinions were never unified, and the two quarreled several times over Rivaldo's best position. Louis van Gaal wanted Rivaldo to play on the left, but he disagreed with the coach and thought he should be placed to play as a centre-forward. When Louis van Gaal returned to Barcelona in 2002 to coach, Rivaldo terminated his contract and joined Milan.

After an argument with Raphael and Rivaldo, when asked if he really hated Brazilians, Van Gaal replied: "If a person or coach thinks a Brazilian is unprofessional, you can't imagine him thinking that other Brazilians are also unprofessional." Raphael was squeezed out of the squad by Valencia and, to be honest, he lost the competition with Valencia. I changed Valencia from right winger to right winger. Valencia were also playing right-back after Jose Mourinho took over, so was my choice a bad one? Van Gaal was sacked after two years in charge of Manchester United and has been idle ever since.
