Designer Maiko Kurogouchi was fascinated by the texture aesthetics of bamboo baskets and the rich social and cultural heritage of Japan they symbolize, and explored the pure power and minimalist beauty of bamboo basket artifacts by cultivating the spiritual world of many bamboo weaving artists.
This season, Kurokawachi's work continues to be influenced by the work of Rokansai Iizuka (1890-1958). Iizuka's grand tone, emphasis on balanced shapes and the elegance of interlacing lines are reflected in this season's collection. He also sought the natural beauty of bamboo, rather than the development of his skills. This spirit of literati is evident in the fabrics, silhouettes and fine craftsmanship of this season's garments.
Inspired by the light and natural nature of the "color", "light", "shadow" and "shape" of the bamboo basket, the Fall/Winter 2023 collection transforms the visual elements into clothing patterns that are presented on loose coats and waistcoats woven with silver thread.
Alpaca knitwear dyed with origami dyeing gives playful imagery, and loose bamboo basket lines create a light atmosphere. The long skirt is beautifully designed to recreate the structure of the bamboo basket through the intricate interlacing of Rachel's jersey stripes and lace. The blouse and skirt are pleated with patterned paper to create a bold woven pattern. Pieces with rich lines are like a drizzle of bamboo leaves, subtly enhancing the depth of the fabric.
Double-sided silk cashmere coats, cropped tops and smartly tailored knitwear balance the bold style of the rest of the collection, combining delicate materials, elegant tailoring and exceptional pattern craftsmanship to convey the brand's signature of women's figures.
The Fall/Winter 2023 collection is based on natural tones such as brown and khaki, complemented by contrasting black and navy cyan.
Earrings and bracelets made of bamboo add a touch of craftsmanship to the collection. This season's footwear still includes high heels and boots, as well as a collaboration with renowned Kyoto-based shoe brand Hakimono Sekizuka. The traditional Japanese clogs "Zori" are cleverly innovated, and leather and Japanese leather socks are combined to create modern shoes.
