"The audience seats on the third floor looked at the black pressing, and the seats were full." As the actor of the main role of the dance drama "Silk Road Flower Rain" "Ying Niang", Kang Qi has participated in more than 100 performances, but the enthusiasm of the audience still surprised her. "This is the vitality of classic works and the vitality of China's excellent traditional culture."

Kang Qi is already the 21st "Ying Niang" in "Silk Road Flower Rain". Based on the murals of the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, this dance drama with the theme of peace and friendship on the Silk Road and the art of countries and regions along the "Belt and Road" was first launched in 1979 and has been passed down to the present day. The dance drama has been performed more than 3,800 times in more than 40 countries and regions, with an audience of more than 5 million, and is known as "the milestone of Chinese dance drama".

The 44-year-old "Silk Road Flower Rain" "resurrected" the thousand-year-old Dunhuang, allowing the deep and profound Chinese excellent traditional culture to spread overseas.

The dance came from Dunhuang

Dunhuang, Gansu, 1977.

Zhu Jiang, the 83-year-old choreographer, still remembers the dancers in the murals of the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang more than 40 years ago. Swaying figures, flowing skirts, graceful plain hands... Beautiful, magnificent. After countless gazes, "Silk Road Flower Rain" "flew out" from the mural.

"Silk Road Flower Rain" originated from an accident. In 1977, the creative team of the Gansu Provincial Song and Dance Troupe (now Gansu Provincial Song and Dance Theater) was rehearsing the performance "Ode to Proud Yang". Chen Shunyao, then deputy director of the propaganda department of the Gansu provincial party committee, came up with a new idea. She suggested that it would be better to look to Dunhuang, a "rich mine of art" deep in the Hexi desert in Gansu Province.

Tunji, Daya; Huang, Sheng Ye. Dunhuang is located in the sea of sand, but on the Silk Road Ancient Road, it is a place where stars shine. She witnessed the fusion of civilizations and cultures, and recorded the grandeur and splendor of Chinese culture.

From the 4th century to the 14th century AD, countless monks, believers, craftsmen and painters climbed the wall to build caves, integrating Han ethnic art, multi-ethnic culture and Eurasian culture, and "inscribed" in a large number of buildings, murals, painted sculptures, and documents. Among them, the rich music and dance images in the murals from the Northern Liang to the Yuan Dynasty are waiting for new interpretations and interpretations.

Since November of that year, the Gansu Provincial Song and Dance Troupe has sent seven batches of creative personnel to Dunhuang to start script creation and dance material collection.

Dunhuang scholar Duan Wenjie recalled in his book "Dunhuang is the Whole of My Life: Memoirs of Duan Wenjie": "In the winter of 1977, performing artists from the Gansu Provincial Song and Dance Troupe came to Mogao Grottoes to create a dance drama that expressed the former glory of the Silk Road, hoping to get inspiration and inspiration from the Dunhuang cave art. I thought they had a good idea, so I enthusiastically led them around the cave and explained the mural..."

"Get up, look at the hole!"

Duan Wenjie's strong "Sichuan taste" shouting is clearly engraved in the memories of the choreographers of the Gansu Provincial Song and Dance Troupe. Zhu Jiang and others recalled that in the days of Dunhuang, every morning, they would follow Duan Wenjie, Shi Weixiang and other Dunhuang guardians, squeeze onto the sheep's intestine path leading to the cave, and step into the time tunnel through history.

There are 492 caves in the southern area of Mogao Grottoes, and almost all of them have dance images. The Tiangong trick music played by the bar, the flying trick music that played freely, and the flexible and graceful warp painting trick music left the imprint of dance art exchange in different periods. Here, different dances such as Hu Xuan Dance and Hu Teng Dance are colorful, suddenly heroic and rugged, and suddenly graceful and stretching, breaking through the rules of Central Plains dance.

"As vast as a sea of smoke, never seen before!" The creative enthusiasm of the choreographers was activated. In one or two months, they visited hundreds of caves, consulted millions of words of materials, and searched for the code to "activate" Dunhuang in more than 45,000 square meters of murals.

Hooking feet, sending crotches, twisting waist, a bow, a smile, a raised hand, a low eyebrow, the dancers' eyes, gestures, and posture are all their materials. After seeing too much, as soon as I closed my eyes, the dancing on the mural passed in front of me like a horse lantern, and I didn't feel dazzled.

So they asked Duan Wenjie: Which dance move is the most typical in Dunhuang tricks? Duan Wenjie answered: It should be the most representative of the rebound pipa dance in Cave 112.

The bouncing pipa is a classic image in Dunhuang murals, appearing more than 50 times in murals during the Tang, Five Dynasties and Song dynasties. The rebound pipa image in Cave 112 comes from the Middle Tang Dynasty, and the dance form and combination form are richer. After some pondering, the classic rebound pipa shape in the dance drama was born.

New problems followed. The image of the mural is static, and you can imitate the pose, but you cannot use the movement of the existing dance genres at that time to connect the static movements.

The choreographers gradually reached a consensus through repeated practice: the mural's static dance posture pays attention to curves, and the bending of the head, shoulders and crotch forms dance movements. Choreographer Xu Qi summed up the consensus and concisely and vividly named the language of Dunhuang dance movements as the curve of "S" shape and "three bends", and deduced the movement law of "S" shape accordingly.

The mural came alive in an instant. "The willow is weak after the little hanging hand, and the clouds are eager to come to life when the slanted robe is swollen"... These images, originally found in ancient poems and classics, danced before the eyes of the choreographers.

With the dance vocabulary, how should the story be told?

At first, the choreography of the dance drama was based on a script called "Dunhuang Song". The script is divided into three acts, telling the story of Dunhuang spanning the three periods of the Tang Dynasty, the Qing Dynasty and the contemporary era. However, because the time span involved in the characters was too large, the story could not be told, and the choreography faced "stagnation". Doubts also poured in from time to time: ""Dunhuang Song", I am afraid that the more 'squatted' the more 'yellow'." ”

When confused, Wu Jian, then head of the propaganda department of the Gansu Provincial Party Committee, suggested that everyone revise the script. He proposed to freeze time and space in typical eras, and shift the focus to the history and culture of the Silk Road and the mutual assistance of countries along the route.

Coming up with new ideas, which don't work, overturn and start over; Think again, overturn again... After half a year of polishing, a new story was born.

This is a story that takes place on the ancient Silk Road in Tang Dynasty China. In the story, the Dunhuang painter "Shenbi Zhang", his daughter Yingniang and the Persian merchant Inus share hardships and intersect life and death, deeply containing the touching friendship and people-to-people ties of all ethnic groups in China and foreign countries on the ancient Silk Road, and China's cultural genes of openness and inclusiveness that stretch for thousands of years.

With the deepening of the creation row, more cultural elements are absorbed. The men's dance was slightly thin, and assistant choreographer An Jian and others joined Gansu Wuwei to attack the drum; There are gaps in Indian dance and Persian dance, Xu Qi, Zhu Jiang and others went to Beijing to find classics from the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and learn from the Oriental Song and Dance Troupe; In order to restore the rhythm of Tang opera, Han Zhongcai and others, who were in charge of composing, repeatedly considered and chose the ancient pipa song "Yue'er Gao" as the keynote... This dance drama, born from the thousand-year-old historical relics of Dunhuang and deeply rooted in the cultural roots of the Silk Road, was finally named "Silk Road Flower Rain".

Lanzhou, Gansu, 1979.

On May 23 of this year, "Silk Road Flower Rain" was officially performed at the Yellow River Theater in Lanzhou. Since then, the dance drama has also sincerely accepted the "provocation" of all parties with an open attitude.

After the performance, the actors went to Dunhuang to collect style, experience the role, and also show the artistic image created together to the experts of Dunhuang. Looking at the familiar mural image dancing in front of their eyes, they excitedly discussed: this is Cave 112, this is like Cave 148, this is not Cave 220...

After a report performance, Shen Congwen, who was invited to watch, was very excited at the symposium the next day, and he put forward many suggestions based on his research on ancient costumes and music, such as the cloud head pattern in front of the shoes made by the Tang Dynasty festival and the length of the gold coat worn by the lady of the festival. These details were all updated in later performances.

An Italian audience member watched the show in Lanzhou and pointed out the flaws in the Roman costumes in the play. After returning to Beijing, he also sent a picture album with the clothes of that time.

After watching the performance, an Indian friend went backstage to help the actors polish the dance moves of Indian dance...

The dance drama has been constantly pondered and refined through observation and guidance from all walks of life.

In September 1979, "Flower Rain" ushered in the moment of "flying". "Silk Road Flower Rain" was staged in Beijing as a National Day tribute program launched by Gansu Province to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, becoming the only one of the 137 programs that were named to perform the entire book for the Party and state leaders and the people in the capital on the National Day night.

"Flower Rain" is on fire!

In this year, "Silk Road Flower Rain" won the first prize for creation and the first prize for performance issued by the former Ministry of Culture, which was the highest award in the literary and art industry at that time. The National Day Tribute Performance Office specially held a symposium for the literary and art circles of the capital for "Silk Road Flower Rain", praising "Silk Road Flower Rain" for opening up a new path for Chinese dance drama and setting a new milestone in the history of Chinese dance drama.

On October 12, 1979, collected by Gansu young writer Chen Xiaobin, "Reflection on the Performance of the Dance Drama "Silk Road Flower Rain" in Beijing (Issue 8)", it was recorded that after watching the performance in Beijing, the main responsible comrade of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee of the Communist Party of China at that time said to the comrades of the song and dance troupe: "You emancipated your mind, dared to innovate, and put the dead Dunhuang murals on the stage and turned them into living dance art. ”

In the same year, the crew was also invited to perform in Guangdong. At the closing ceremony of the 46th Canton Fair, tens of thousands of businessmen and officials from all walks of life in Guangdong and more than 100 countries and regions in the world watched the performance. An Iranian friend was thrilled after watching it, saying that the dance drama restored the essence of Persian dance.

From December 1979 to January 1980, the crew performed 15 performances in Hong Kong, with enthusiastic response from the audience and media coverage. Zhu Jiang recalled that each curtain call took more than half an hour.

That performance was full and hard to find, which won the praise of Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan compatriots and international friends. Some goods, shops, and restaurants named after "Dunhuang" and "Feitian" have greatly increased their sales.

As one of the first performances in Hong Kong after the reform and opening up, "Silk Road Flower Rain", rooted in the profound traditional Chinese culture, shows the Silk Road spirit of friendship and mutual learning, and makes people feel the breath of China's opening up and has since gone to the world.

"Silk Road Flower Rain" has been warmly received in many countries along the "Belt and Road". In the memories of Xu Qi and others, at the performance site, the audience continued to express cultural identity and emotional resonance with warm applause. At the curtain call, the applause lasted for a long time, "Bravo! ”“Bravo!” , cheers echoed in the ears.

Wang Qiong, vice president of the Gansu Provincial Song and Dance Theater, said that over the past 44 years, "Silk Road Flower Rain" has been walking non-stop, bringing the Silk Road style and Dunhuang culture to more than 40 countries and regions such as France, Italy, Germany, Japan, and North Korea, setting a record of more than 3,800 performances and more than 5 million people watching Chinese dance opera, which is known as "living Dunhuang murals and beautiful artistic enjoyment".

Zhang Yongxia, member of the Standing Committee of the Gansu Provincial Party Committee and director of the Propaganda Department, said that "Silk Road Flower Rain" is a special "cultural messenger" for the joint construction of the "Belt and Road". It shows the breadth and depth of Dunhuang culture and the echo of the Silk Road spirit, dancing the Chinese spirit and Chinese style.

The reason why "Silk Road Flower Rain" has become a well-known "cultural hit" overseas is largely due to its excavation and presentation of world elements in Chinese culture, focusing on the enduring friendship of exchanges and exchanges among Silk Road countries. Li Jinjiang, director of the Gansu Provincial Song and Dance Theater, believes that this is the undying root soul of "Silk Road Flower Rain".

Looking back, we can still feel the shock of the audience more than 40 years ago from between the lines: "This dance should only be seen in the sky, and there can be a few times on earth." ”

More than 40 years later, the classic youth is still there.

In the Opera Hall of the National Centre for the Performing Arts, as the Silk Road scroll slowly unfolded and the cultural scenery of Dunhuang was presented, the audience immersed in the long scroll of history applauded. On the last day of the performance, the actors made 6 curtain calls, but the audience still did not want to leave.

Li Jinjiang said that all the more than 11,000 tickets for the five performances of the National Centre for the Performing Arts were sold, and the venues were full and full. Before the start of the performance, there are still audience members calling to inquire about ticket purchase.

What makes Li Jinjiang even happier is that the performance of the dance drama has attracted a large number of young people. "I stood at the entrance and observed that 60% of them were young people coming in to watch." Li Jinjiang said: This shows that China's excellent traditional culture is being loved by the younger generation.

China really deserves to be a big country that has accumulated 5,000 years of culture, and the pride in my heart suddenly rises! ”

Dunhuang dance, a new dance genre that originated from "Silk Road Flower Rain", has also shown its vitality in the inheritance and development.

Gao Jinrong, 88, is the founder of the Dunhuang dance teaching system. Inspired by the performance of "Silk Road Flower Rain", she devoted her life to the research and teaching of Dunhuang dance.

Born in openness, evergreen in openness. "Silk Road Flower Rain" has been adapted many times in more than 40 years, and has constantly innovated and upgraded with an inclusive and open attitude. In order to better meet the interest of contemporary audiences and meet the needs of the touring stage, Gansu Provincial Song and Dance Theater not only launched two official performance versions of the 2008 version and the 2016 version based on the 1979 version, but also created an 80-minute "tourism version", and performed a five-year regular performance in Dunhuang City from 2017.

Zhao Shengliang, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Dunhuang Academy, believes that Dunhuang culture is the crystallization of long-term exchanges and integration of various civilizations and a cultural treasure house on the Silk Road. "Silk Road Flower Rain" has thoroughly understood the essence of Dunhuang culture and grasped the essence of dance art, and is a model of creative transformation and innovative development of China's excellent traditional culture.

Today, "Silk Road Flower Rain" is no longer unique. Driven by "Silk Road Flower Rain", many "Dunhuang Brand" plays such as "Dunhuang Dream", "Dunhuang Ancient Music" and "Dunhuang Goddess" have emerged in Gansu Province one after another, and explosive cultural products and cultural phenomena based on excellent traditional Chinese culture continue to "go out of the circle" and "break the circle". In particular, "Da Meng Dunhuang", which was created in 2000, earned more than 100 million yuan, which not only gained audience reputation, but also achieved economic benefits, and was hailed as a successful example of "more output, more performance" of domestic stage plays in the new century. The rich and long historical accumulation of Gansu represented by Dunhuang and the open, inclusive and eclectic cultural core it carries are also deeply rooted in the hearts of the people with the dissemination of art works.

■ Reporter's Notes

"Flower Rain Man" three times "tears"

A dance drama based on the thousand-year-old Dunhuang has received echoes for nearly half a century.

When we, as viewers, embark on a journey of discovery and approach them, the choreographers, interpreters, and inheritors of dance dramas, a question always lingers in our minds: What gave birth to fine products in that era of material poverty?

The founders of "Silk Road Flower Rain" are old, rising to their knees, and showing classic moves; The new generation of leading actors is full of pride because they can still inherit the classics...

Every interview is a reminiscence and hook. There are hardships, hesitations, surprises, and wonders, which make us linger. There are a few moments where tears almost burst out of my eyes, which are moving.

The first time was Zhu Jiang, the choreographer of the 1979 version of "Silk Road Flower Rain". When the reporter asked if he would still think of Dunhuang and the old experts who were worried about Dunhuang, Zhu Jiang, who was still immersed in the situation of the old performance, hurriedly interrupted the reporter. "I can't say about them, I can't mention the old gentlemen, as soon as I say they are going to cry." As he spoke, his eyes were moist.

Chang Shuhong, Duan Wenjie, Fan Jinshi... Generations of Dunhuang people have lived in the sea of sand, guarded the loneliness, devoted themselves to cultivation and careful care, only to protect the magnificent wealth in the depths of the desert, and only then can they support the rich imagination of the artist. The root soul of classics comes from here, and the nourishment of art comes from here.

The second time is Kang Qi, the 21st actor of the protagonist "Yingniang". When telling reporters about the role, Kang Qi burst into tears and finished the scene in the dance drama where she met with her "father" and "Shenbi Zhang", and then gained and lost. As if at that moment, she was "Yingniang".

Classics are never relenting. The seriousness of the characters and the dedication to the work have been like this since the beginning of the creation more than 40 years ago. In order to play "Divine Pen Zhang", the first-generation actor Zhong Minghua once hid in the simple exhibition hall of Dunhuang, staring at the pottery disc cleared in the quicksand for a long time, and realized the mood of the painter. At his request, the administrator took out the disc and handed it to him. "Holding the disc, the gap between me and the 'Divine Pen Zhang' and the unknown painting workshop of the past generations seems to have disappeared." Since then, Zhong Minghua has been with "Shenbi Zhang" and "Shen Feng" for 21 years until he left the stage at the age of 65.

The solo dance is neat and stunning, the group dance "eyelashes must be neat", the precise control of dance movements, and the repeated scrutiny of performance emotions... Adhering to the ultimate pursuit of the older generation of artists, the contemporary "Flower Rain People" dare not downgrade, but only treat the present with a more strict attitude. It is this dedication passed down from generation to generation that has made today's classic.

The third time was Li Jinjiang, director of the Gansu Provincial Song and Dance Theater.

The joy of the success of the dance drama in Beijing and the sadness of the talent "Southeast Flying" surged in his heart, and Li Jinjiang's eyes were red. The inheritance and recreation of classics, he has mixed joys and worries.

Even the Gansu Provincial Song and Dance Theater, which has a classic play such as "Silk Road Flower Rain", has development problems and faces the challenge of brain drain. For the creative transformation and innovative development of the profound historical and cultural background, talent is the main body and the core. To become the "Swan Lake of the East", "Silk Road Flower Rain" needs the relay of talents and more creative efforts.

When we try to use these details to stitch together the outline of history, the answer to the question gradually becomes clear——

Excellent literary and artistic works are inseparable from the profound call and rich nourishment of China's excellent traditional culture. Today's China is a continuation of historical China, and the development of real culture is inseparable from the nourishment of the excellent traditional Chinese culture formed and developed over thousands of years. All literary and artistic works are deeply rooted in the fertile soil of traditional culture, which is the innate cultural gene of literary and artistic works.

Excellent literary and artistic works are inseparable from the intensive cultivation of creators who are willing to be lonely and keep the clouds. Rushing to achieve quick results, exhausting one's resources, and making shoddy production is not only a kind of harm to literature and art, but also a kind of harm to the spiritual life of society. Literary and artistic creation also requires historical patience, continuous effort, and long-term achievements.

Excellent literary and artistic works are inseparable from outstanding literary and artistic talents. When "Silk Road Flower Rain" was first created, there were many outstanding literary and artistic talents on the banks of the Yellow River. Gansu, which has a rich historical and cultural heritage, still needs to catch up with its economy, but culture and art can welcome prosperity and prosperity in the opportunity of creative transformation and innovative development, and move from the "plateau" to the "peak".

Compared with more than 40 years ago, we are in an era of material abundance, we are better equipped to create more literary and artistic masterpieces, and we have more reason to take more solid steps in the creative transformation and innovative development of China's excellent traditional culture. Therefore, it is urgent to inherit and carry forward the fine creative tradition of "Silk Road Flower Rain", reform the mechanism for attracting and retaining talents, form a good environment for talent accumulation, promote the emergence of a large number of young talents, become talents as soon as possible, encourage them to take root in the thick soil, and create excellent works worthy of the times, the people and the nation.

In 2013, General Secretary Xi Jinping proposed the initiative of jointly building the "Belt and Road". In the past decade, the Belt and Road Initiative has transformed from vision to action, from major initiatives to popular global public goods and international cooperation platforms, promoting common prosperity through connectivity. These vivid practices are all valuable assets of literary and artistic creation in the new era. The new era and the new Silk Road will surely bloom more and more beautiful new "flower rain".
