The 3rd China Go Tianyuan Battle was held in Beijing, Changshu and Shanghai from January to March 1989. In the end, Jiang Zhujiu won the right to challenge, and in the five-game chess duel with Liu Xiaoguang, Jiang Zhujiu lost 2-3, and Liu Xiaoguang successfully won the title of Tianyuan.

This year's competition is jointly sponsored by Xinmin Evening News and Go Monthly. The Tian Yuan Battle Challenger Trials were held in Beijing from January 20 to 26, 1989. Ma Xiaochun, Zhang Xuan, Wang Jianhong, Fang Tianfeng, Rui Naiwei, Chen Linxin, Jiang Zhujiu, Cao Dayuan, Qian Yuping, Luo Jianwen, Wang Qun, Wang Runan, Yang Hui, Liang Weitang, Yang Shihai, Yu Bin, a total of 16 famous Chinese chess players participated, and the chess saint Nie Weiping could not participate in this tournament due to the preparation for the "Ying's Cup" final. After 4 rounds of single-elimination matches, Jiang Zhujiu defeated Cao Dayuan, Rui Naiwei, Fang Tianfeng and Qian Yuping in a row, thus gaining the right to challenge.

The Challenge is a best-of-5 tournament and takes place in Changshu and Shanghai from February 28 to March 10. In the first two games played in Changshu, Liu Xiaoguang won two consecutive games, and the last three games moved to Shanghai, and in the third and fourth games, Liu Xiaoguang was won by Jiang Zhujiu for two consecutive games, and the two sides drew 2-2. In the tiebreaker, Liu Xiaoguang won and locked the overall score at 3-2, with this victory Liu Xiaoguang successfully defended the title and won the title of Tianyuan for a second time.
