When Mao Yanwen was 9 years old, her father and friend Fang Yaotang set her a doll kiss. Her father believes that the Fang family is rich and reliable, and he has found a good home for his daughter.

When Mao Yanwen was 16 years old, the Fang family was worried that the woman would cause trouble if she read too much, so they asked for an early marriage. Mao Yanwen, who accepted the new idea, was already extremely dissatisfied with the arranged marriage at this time, and fiercely opposed it several times, but his father believed that he could not regret it.

Mao Yanwen's mother felt sorry for her daughter and persuaded her to pretend to agree and help Mao Yanwen escape secretly on the day the palanquin came to the door. The Fang family's team arrived at the door, but returned with an empty palanquin. The Fang family was so angry that they had to sue the officials, and Mao Yanwen's father had to compensate a thousand oceans, return all the bride price, and say all the good things before the Fang family agreed to withdraw from the marriage.

The reason why Mao Yanwen was so resolute in withdrawing from marriage was on the one hand that he opposed arranged marriages, and on the other hand, he had someone he liked. This person is Mao Yanwen's cousin Zhu Junyi, Mao Yanwen and Zhu Junyi are two little guesses, deep feelings, and from repentance to escape, behind Mao Yanwen has always been Zhu Junyi in the scheme to cheer on.

After the Fang family withdrew from the marriage, Mao Yanwen's father saw that the two had become a boat and promised to get engaged to them in a few years.

Although Mao Yanwen adored her cousin, she had received a new education, somewhat aware of the dangers of marriage between close relatives and worried that her offspring would have diseases. But her cousin comforted her and said that as long as close relatives marry out of love, the offspring must be very good, and only two close relatives who do not love each other will have bad offspring when they marry, so this dispels Mao Yanwen's last doubts.

Sure enough, the man's mouth deceives the ghost.

When Mao Yanwen was 18 years old, she finally got engaged to her cousin, and seeing that the sweet life was about to begin, her cousin told her that she was going to study in the United States, and only after returning to China could she save the country and the people, and also give her a better life. So Mao Yanwen and his cousin fell in love for six years, and could only rely on letters to convey their thoughts every day.

Zhu Junyi's Tsinghua classmate Wu Mi, that is, the later master of traditional Chinese studies, was deeply moved by Mao Yanwen's love letter to Zhu Junyi, and has always been deeply in love with Mao Yanwen, but it is the two of his classmates, so he can only hide this love in his heart.

Zhu Junyi and Wu Mi have a classmate called Chen Liexun, Chen Liexun has always wanted to introduce his sister Chen Xinyi to Wu Mi, and Mao Yanwen and Chen Xinyi are also very good friends, Wu Mi once asked Mao Yanwen to understand Chen Xinyi's situation, and later Wu Mi and Chen Xinyi got married, and Mao Yanwen should be regarded as Wu Mi's matchmaker.

After graduating from Columbia University with a Ph.D., Zhu Junyi joined Southeast University. Just when Mao Yanwen felt that he had finally come to his end, his cousin Zhu Junyi told her that he was in love with a female student and wanted to break the marriage contract with her. Ironically, his first reason for dissolving the marriage was that it was not good for close relatives to marry.

But in Mao Yanwen's view, this is an excuse, 6 years of hard waiting, blue silk and white hair, once empty, she can't accept it. Mao Yanwen begged Wu Mi to persuade Zhu Junyi to change his mind, but there was no good result. Zhu Junyi still broke the marriage contract with Mao Yanwen.

It turned out that Mao Yanwen, as the wife of a good friend and brother, Wu Mi had some scruples. Now that the two have broken up, Wu Mi and Chen Xinyi divorced, decided to abandon their wives and sons, and pursued Mao Yanwen bitterly.

When Wu Mi chased Mao Yanwen, every time he wrote a letter, he always remembered that he read her letter from Zhu Junyi one year and gradually developed admiration and fantasy. Where does Mao Yanwen's heart hurt, doesn't Wu Mi know? He poked at the scar like this, as if he was deliberately coming nonsense, Mao Yanwen's disgust was as deep as a day, and his evaluation of Wu Mi was: "Nerd!"

At this time, Mao Yanwen was 36 years old, she had rebelled against arranged marriages, she was disappointed by her lover, and she was ruined by married scumbags, and she was really unlucky in terms of feelings. Just when she was about to despair of a man, a classmate Zhu Xi came to the door to introduce her to a partner, this object has a very noble status, and he has always had a deep affection for Mao Yanwen, but his age and generation, even today seem a little unsuitable.

This classmate introduced his uncle Xiong Xiling. Xiong Xiling was a former Qing Hanlin who served as an envoy to Fengtian Salt Transport; After the Republic of China, he served as the chief of finance, the premier of the state, and led Liang Qichao and Sun Baoqi, and was the so-called "celebrity cabinet".

Later, he founded the Xiangshan Salesian Home, hired Li Dazhao, Jiang Menglin, Hu Shi and others to form a council, explored a set of scientific and practical modern education methods, and made the Salesian Home extremely prosperous, with a maximum number of more than 1,600 people.

Xiong Xiling's first wife, that is, Zhu Xi's aunt Zhu Qihui and Mao Yanwen are old acquaintances, she appreciates Mao Yanwen's courage and talent, actively supports her in Mao Yanwen and her cousin's romantic entanglement to get rid of this scumbag, and even holds a group meeting to witness the dissolution of the marriage contract between the two. With this friendship, Mao Yanwen respected Zhu Qihui very much, and when Zhu Qihui died, Mao Yanwen went to mourn as a junior, very sad.

So Xiong Xiling asked her niece to raise a kiss, which shocked Mao Yanwen a lot, she has always regarded Xiong Xiling as an adult in her heart, and she couldn't accept him as her husband. What's more, Xiong Xiling is 28 years older than Mao Yanwen, and he is enough to be a father when he marries late and has children later. However, Xiong Xiling was reluctant, he not only wrote love letters to Mao Yanwen every day, but also mobilized Mao Yanwen's classmates, namely his niece Zhu Xi and daughter Xiong Zhi, to take turns to persuade Mao Yanwen. Xiong Zhi even made a special trip from Beijing to Shanghai to help her father chase her future stepmother with a six-month pregnant belly.

The niece introduced the object to the uncle, and the daughter helped the father chase his girlfriend, although it sounded strange, but it also showed from the side that the Xiong family welcomed Mao Yanwen very much. Mao Yanwen was already old at this time, and finally nodded under Xiong Xiling's fierce attack.

In 1935, 37-year-old Mao Yanwen married 66-year-old Xiong Xiling in the face of rumors. Since Xiong's family was in Beijing, Mao Yanwen resigned from the faculty of Fudan University. Xiong Xiling believed that his wife was not a traditional woman who only married her husband and taught her children at home, so she introduced her to work at the Salesian Home in Xiangshan. This charitable educational institution was founded by Xiong Xiling and had been run by Zhu Qihui before, and now the burden fell on Mao Yanwen's shoulders.

In order to look better matched with his wife, Xiong Xiling, who has a beard all his life, shaved off his beard, threw away his cane for many years, and often accompanied his wife out to play. He called Mao Yanwen "Yanai", and Mao Yanwen began to be unaccustomed to his age, and he kept calling him "grandpa" with his juniors. It may be that it has been a long time, it may be that Xiong Xiling's sincerity touched her, and Mao Yanwen finally changed her name to "Bingai" (Xiong Xiling character Bingsan).

The marriage seemed to be very happy except for age, but unfortunately, only two years after marriage, Xiong Xiling died.

After Xiong Xiling's death on December 25, 1937, Mao Yanwen became the director of the Beijing Xiangshan Salesian Institute. Later, he attended the International Conference on the Prohibition of Trafficking in Women and Children in Jakarta, Indonesia. In 1939, he was elected to the Senate of Zhejiang Province. In 1947, he was elected to the Senate of Peiping City, and in November of the same year, he was elected as a "deputy to the National Assembly".
