John Houston was born in Fife in 1930 and grew up in Wendy Gates, on the east coast of Scotland. He was a keen athlete in his youth and his early artistic achievements were commensurate with his football abilities. He played for Dundee United and briefly became a professional until 1951 when he suffered a serious knee injury. He began his studies at Edinburgh Art College in 1948.
He painted landscapes of Scotland's east coast mainly in the expressionist style, while Bass rock had a wide range of features in these compositions. His work goes beyond the simple representation of the countryside, using unique, bold, warm, vibrant yellows, oranges and pinks in color to form unforgettable pieces.
John Houston has long been a teacher for generations of students at the Edinburgh College of Art, making a great contribution to the cultural life of Scotland.
