Tongji students rush to the mountains and townships to build a "love bridge"

On October 2, the Panamanian edition of the Latin American Overseas Chinese Voice Xinmin Evening News published a report

In July this year, after seven days of construction, a new bridge was completed in Yong'an Village, Nuodeng Town, Yunlong County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province.

This is the 11th pedestrian bridge construction project of Tongji University's Endless Bridge Society. Their previous projects were called "Endless Bridge", but this bridge was named "Tong'an Bridge", and the word "Tong'an" was taken from Tongji and Yong'an respectively.

The bridge building process is broadcast live over the web. At the beginning of the project, a boy posted a commentary on WeChat for the purpose of promoting the new community and the project. This "broadcast male god" is Luo Lanqiu, who has just successfully applied for a doctorate in Tongji University, and is currently an advisor to the Endless Bridge Society of Tongji University.

Good luck around the corner

Luo Lanju's hometown is Dazhou, Sichuan, and like him, he has studied in Shanghai from elsewhere, and there are many students who have gone to remote areas to build bridges voluntarily after joining the club. Some of these bridge repair sites are the team members' own hometowns.

Building bridges has not been easy.

In the Spring Festival of 2020, Luo Lanzhong was eating hot pot in his hometown, and a phone call from the Endless Bridge Charity Fund made him put down his hairy belly. Because of the pandemic, the Foundation plans to shelve its original funding for summer programs.

For the next 20 days, the project was repeated and the mood of the team members fluctuated. Soon, the project ushered in a turnaround. 2020 is the year of China's poverty alleviation, Tongji University has some improvement plans and special funds in Yunlong County, Dali Prefecture, Yunnan Province, which is built with the assistance of the counterpart, and decided to let the community build a bridge at the corresponding point. This made Luo Lanqiu really excited for a while.

As early as 2019, when Sun Yujie, a counselor at the School of Civil Engineering of Tongji University, was serving as a village cadre in Yunnan, he combined the local situation and hoped that the students could participate in local construction together. The community named the bridge building team "Tongxin Anxin Bridge" Practice Team.

Although the project plan was finalized, due to the repeated epidemic, the project investigation in April was delayed until the end of 2020.

Deep in Western Yunnan

"See the house, go to the cry", "Shout well, walk together for half a day", "Drill up the mountain in the clouds, go down the mountain to the river"... The complex terrain and fickle weather in the mountains of Yunnan, as well as backward traffic conditions, are all recorded in the smooth mouth.

The bridge point in Yong'an Village has a similar scene. The village committee located in the center of Yong'an Village and the three groups of Meilong, Lianping and Xiaping are separated by the Lan River, and the villagers need to wade through the water or take a detour. Grandma Yang of Meilong Village stood by the river and said, "I have lived here all my life, when I was young, I could walk seven or eight miles of mountain road back to my mother's house, and now I can't walk when I'm old." She looked forward to taking her grandson for a walk after the bridge was built.

As a team consultant and a veteran of the project, Luo Lanzhong was mainly responsible for skills training, construction organization, personnel arrangement and on-site coordination in the Tongxin Anqiao project. When he participated in the Yunnan Meile Village project a few years ago, Luo Lanqiu participated in the research as an advance team member. "When I went to the countryside, I felt really isolated from the outside world. I don't want to look at my phone much every day, the scenery is particularly good, and when I am bored, I sit in a daze on the school or the country road. ”

But for Luo Lanqiu, what impressed him most was the moment when the villagers walked under the guidance of their classmates after the bridge was built. "What came to my eyes was the scene when I first came to investigate a year before I built the bridge. At that time, it was still an old wooden bridge, and in winter there would be a thick layer of frost on it, and the villagers walked on it trembling. Now when I see the villagers walking on the repaired bridge, I feel very down-to-earth. ”

Design and construction

Topography, geology, hydrological data of the bridge point... After preliminary field research and consultation with the villagers and the construction team, the team began the design work.

Three instructors and 10 graduate students from the School of Civil Engineering and the School of Architecture and Urban Planning participated. After many online discussions and offline exchanges, they finally decided to adopt the endless Beret Bridge mode of construction. This mode has the characteristics of modularity, light weight, convenient transportation, fast construction and high safety performance, and does not need to rely on large mechanical equipment, and can be completed by manpower alone. After 35 discussions and modifications, the team drew 5 sets of 59 drawings for the Tongxin Bridge project. On July 1 this year, the construction of the Tong'an An Bridge began.

The students braved the scorching sun to lay the berets for bridge building, and everything proceeded in an orderly manner as planned. But on the evening of the fourth day, there was trouble, and the underside of the bridge could not locate the pier. Just when the players were exhausted, a beam of light came from the other side. Several villagers pulled wires out of their homes and hung lamps on trees on the shore, and an uncle shouted with a thick accent: "Let's help." More and more villagers rushed to the bridge point and pushed the bridge to the middle pier.

With the efforts of the team and the sincere assistance of the local government and villagers, Tong'an An Bridge finally successfully connected the two banks of the Yue River. On July 8, Tongxin Bridge was opened. Grandma Yang of Meilong Village crossed the bridge with her grandson and walked to the other side.

The 34-meter-long Tong'an An Bridge shortened the detour of 40 minutes to 1 minute.

According to statistics, since 2012, Tongji University's Wuzhiqiao Society has contacted social forces such as Wuzhiqiao Charity Fund and led 329 Tongji students to participate in 11 bridge construction projects.

Towards expansiveness

It is precisely the study and life in Shanghai that has constructed the possibility of Luo Lanqiu moving towards a broader world.

In 2017, Luo Lanqiu, a junior in college, saw that the senior who was also a fellow sichuan resident sent a message in the circle of friends about the construction project of the Tongji Endless Bridge. Luo Lanqiu was shocked: "I didn't expect students to be able to do such a big project." ”

Wanting to test his professional knowledge and do something to get rid of poverty, Luo Lanzhao signed up for the club. But he found that he had gained much more than that. At the beginning, it was to plan activities and edit the public account, and then began to participate in research, design and construction in the second year, and then gradually tried to find bridges with the team as a coordinator or consultant, and completed various affairs inside and outside the team together. "These projects are not only to solve technical problems, but also to coordinate interpersonal relationships with multiple parties." The rich practice brought by the club allowed him to gain a lot of things outside the classroom.

In the classroom, his mentor, Professor Sun Limin, had a profound influence on him. Professor Sun Limin's pragmatic attitude was engraved in Luo Lanqiu's mind. Despite his achievements, Sun Limin did not specifically apply for the award. "The teacher said that he made what he wanted to do, and if it was useful to reality, then it was enough to play its role, and there was no need for any awards to package it."
