The third season of Sky's original series, Attack from the Bottom of the Sea, will be the first episode to be filmed and broadcast in 8K resolution in collaboration with Samsung.

The first two seasons of Attack from the Bottom were shot in 4K resolution, while in the third season, Sky Studios partnered with Bavaria Fiction to shift the shooting specifications to 8K, while the audio specifications were upgraded to Dolby Atmos.

Moritz Poulter and Jan Kessel, executive producers of "Attack from the Bottom of the Sea," said:

Attack from the Bottom of the Sea is the world's first series to be produced in 8K resolution and Dolby Atmos, thanks to excellent image quality and 3D stereo, we can depict individual characters and storylines in a more emotional and practical way, through a new collaboration with Samsung and a long-term partnership with Dolby and Sky Studios, we have created a truly immersive experience for our audiences, and we are very excited to use the latest technology to produce the third season of Attack from the Bottom of the Sea.

The company said its partnership with Samsung will deliver Season 3 content in 8K resolution to Sky Q subscribers through Samsung 8K TVs. No further technical details have been provided, but Sky did confirm that shooting has not yet begun.

The third season of Attack from the Bottom of the Sea will be addressed in 8K from production to broadcast, but it is not the first to be shot in 8K resolution.

Netflix has been using RED Helium 8K cameras to shoot episodes like Lost in Space (Season 2), Politician, and Our Planet, while Amazon's super tick has been exploring 8K. Warner re-scanned the 8K Dunkirk from 70mm film, but foreign media had seen the 8K scanned "Dunkirk" footage, but because of its low frame rate (24fps), it did not look very "8K".

"Attack from the Bottom of the Sea" is a symbolic step forward for the industry, and it is a victory for Samsung, which is particularly eager to position 8K as the next process for high-end TVs. However, because the availability of Sky Q is limited to certain regions, it is unlikely that the 8K landscape will change in any significant way.

Sky has yet to announce the launch date for the third season of "Attack from the Bottom of the Sea."
