Now we are accustomed to using the Hedong lion roar to describe the image of those noisy women. So why is hedong lion roar involved with the image of a humble woman? What are the stories of historical celebrities behind it? Today we will take a look at the origin of the Lion Roar in Hedong and the story behind it.

The origin of the Hedong lion roar and the story behind it

Su Dongpo, a great scholar of the Song Dynasty, once wrote a poem "Sending Wu Deren and Jane Chen Jichang", which mainly described the deep friendship between him and his friends Wu Deren and Chen Jichang, and there were many humorous jokes between friends in the poem. The allusion to the lion roar in Hedong is from this poem by Su Shi, which has such a verse:

The Residents of Longqiu were also pitiful, talking about the fact that there were sleepless nights.

Overhearing the roar of the lion in Hedong, the staff fell into the palm of his hand in a daze.

The meaning of these two poems is that this Longqiu resident is as pitiful as I am, and he only likes to talk about the world all day long, and he is not willing to sleep at night. Suddenly, he heard a sound like the roar of a lion in Hedong, which frightened him so much that the staff in his hand fell to the ground, and his heart was very dazed. So who does the "Dragon Hill Resident" in the verse refer to?

The Longqiu resident is Chen Jichang, a friend of Su Dongpo mentioned in the title of the poem, who is a famous hermit in the world. Chen Ji often lived in seclusion in a place called Longqiu in Huangzhou, Hubei Province, so he called himself Mr. Longqiu. Chen Jichang often likes to wear a square and high hat on his head, just like the Fang Shan Crown worn by ancient musicians, so everyone calls him Fang Shanzi.

So what kind of people in ancient times could be called hermits? We say that hermits are those who can maintain an independent personality, pursue freedom of thought, do not bend the law, do not depend on power, have extraordinary talents and knowledge, and are truly out of the heart do not want to enter the world. That is to say, the hermit is a person who has the ability to become an official but does not want to be an official, not those who retreat to the mountains and forests when the official field is not satisfactory; the hermit is a moral person who has his own spiritual pursuit, not those who live a carefree life all day long, and the hermit is those who are learned and virtuous, not those who do nothing all day.

So is Chen Jichang a hermit in the end? Su Shi said in the "Biography of Fang Shanzi": "However, Fang Shanzi had a meritorious valve in the world, and he became an official, so that he could engage in it, and now it has become apparent." And his home is in Luoyang, the garden is magnificent and the prince and so on. Hebei has a field, and it is enough to be rich in life. If they are all abandoned and not taken, and come alone in the poor mountains, will they not get it? The meaning of this passage is that Fang Shanzi was born in a family of meritorious deeds for generations, and he should have been an official, and if he could be placed in the official field, he should have been famous by now. His original home was in Luoyang, and the garden house was majestic and rich, comparable to the prince's house. There are still fields in Hebei, and the income of thousands of silk horses can be obtained every year, which is enough to make him live a rich and happy life. However, he did not go to enjoy it, but instead came to the poor mountain, was this not because of his unique understanding of the heart?

Chen Jichang's father, Chen Xiliang, was an official to Taichang Shaoqing. Chen Jichang has been very rich in his family since he was a child, he spends money like dirt, loves to drink and dance swords, does not want to be constrained by the world, and likes to do his own thing. In middle age, he also went to school against his will, but he did not enter the army as an official. In his later years, he did not want to be disturbed by the world, so he gave up a lot of his family wealth and lived in seclusion in Longqiu, Huangzhou, often walking alone among the mountains and forests, enjoying a free and free life.

It can be seen that Chen Jichang is indeed a true hermit.

So how did Su Shi become friends with this hermit?

We say that the friendship between Su Shi and Chen Jichang should start from Su Shi's depreciation of Huangzhou. In 1079 AD, the "Wutai Shi" case occurred, Su Shi was nearly killed in the imperial court, and after surviving the disaster, he was demoted to Huangzhou as a deputy envoy of regimental training. We say that the regimental exercise envoys of the Song Dynasty were only used to arrange degraded officials, and there was no actual work. Su Shi was discouraged at this time and called himself a resident of Dongpo.

Su Shi met Chen Jichang while traveling in Huangzhou. It turned out that the Su family and the Chen family had been friends for generations, and Su Shi and Chen Ji had known each other for many years, but they met again at this moment, and it was inevitable that they would be a little sad. Su Shi had just experienced the uncertainty of life and death, and Chen Jichang had already seen through the world, recalling the youthful vigor of his youth, and the two could only look at each other and smile. The friendship between a lonely man and a hermit in the mountains began.

Chen Jichang often liked to invite guests to his home to drink and invite singers and prostitutes to play in his home, which caused dissatisfaction among Chen Jichang's wife. Whenever Chen Jichang and the guests were making a loud noise at home, his wife would smash the dishes and scold the bowls, which made Chen Jichang and the guests very embarrassed. But Chen Jichang was a person who was afraid of the inside, and he could only show helplessness about what his wife did, so Su Shi wrote such a poem to make fun of him.

The origin of the Hedong lion roar and the story behind it

So why do you joke that Chen Jichang's wife is a Lion Roar of Hedong?

Let's first look at what the lion's roar refers to. In Buddhism, the lion roar is used as a metaphor for the Buddha (bodhisattva) to teach the Fa, and it is said that when the Buddha (bodhisattva) teaches the Fa to sentient beings, it is as if the lion can subdue the beasts, so the Buddhist scriptures often use the lion roar to refer to the Buddha (bodhisattva) teaching. Then Su Shi called Chen Jichang's wife shouting a lion roar, which was to make fun of Chen Jichang's voice after listening to his wife's shout, just like the beasts saw the lion. On the other hand, a woman's cry can make a man helpless, which shows how tough this woman is.

So why is it said that it is the lion roar of Hedong? It turned out that Chen Jichang's wife, Liu Shi, was from Hedong County. At that time, the surnames of Liu, Xue, and Pei in Hedong became the three surnames of Hedong, and Liu Zongyuan, one of the eight masters of the Tang and Song Dynasties, was the surname of Liu in Hedong, also known as Liu Hedong. Therefore, Su Shi used Hedong to refer to the Liu clan.

Therefore, the Hedong lion roar is what Su Shi used to describe Chen Jichang's wife shouting at Chen Jichang, and even more to make fun of Chen Jichang's overwhelm after hearing his wife's shouting, and the image of a woman who felt tough just by hearing the voice jumped on the paper.
