According to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and the Estado de la Nación 2018 (2018) report, there are at least 30 endangered species caught in Costa Rica.

The Costa Rican website "elmundo.cr" reported on November 14 that the "2018 Costa Rica National Report" said that as an "ecological country", Costa Rica has achieved excellent results in environmental protection, but still lacks sustainability in the management of natural heritage.

"The measurements show an increase in the number of endangered species of flora and fauna in Costa Rica," the report reads. It is necessary to systematically assess them to determine the current living conditions of these organisms and to develop policies for interventions related to them. ”

In addition, the researchers also explained in the report that the sustainability of the ecological environment is threatened not only because of the pressure from human activities. The lack of knowledge of the public to protect species diversity and weaknesses and deficiencies in public management are also factors that threaten the sustainability of the ecological environment.

In 2017, Costa Rica established the Comisión Interinstitucional para la Gestión del Conocimiento y la Información sobre Biodiversidad. This year, the National Commission of Nature Reserves (Consejo Nacional de Áreas de Conservación) updated the official list of endangered species and released the first "Informe Estado del Ambiente" report. The report reads: Between 2017 and early 2018, Costa Rica established two new marine nature reserves: Cabo Blanco and Bahía Santa Elena to correct the negative historical trend of ignoring the natural heritage of the sea.
