Kane, Harry Maguire, Foden: England's 2022 World Cup player importance rankings

England manager Gareth Southgate announced England's 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup on Thursday afternoon.

Harry Kane is England's talisman and there is no doubt that he will be included. Also playing an important role in Qatar are Bellingham, Phil Foden, Rice and Saqa.

Maguire was still selected for England despite losing his place at Manchester United, while Madison, who was often overlooked by Southgate in the past, was also included in the squad.

That's bad news for the likes of Ivan Tony and Tomori, who both missed out.

England are placed in Group B and will start their match against Iran on 21 November. Ahead of the match, we ranked England's 26-man squad and some of the players who missed out, from "necessary names on the squad list" to "unfortunate misses".

Indispensable players for the team

Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)

Kane is integral to England's success.

If in good form, England really have a chance to win the title. If he hadn't been at his best, the Three Lions wouldn't have had a chance to end their long headless history.

Important players in the team

Pickford (Everton), Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund), Raheem Sterling (Chelsea), Rice (West Ham), Stones (Manchester City)

Not surprisingly, the five players mentioned above will start in almost every match of the World Cup in Qatar.

Raheem Sterling has not been ideal at Chelsea this season, but he has always played for England; Bellingham, despite being only 19 years old, should be a regular starter in midfield alongside Rice.

Major contributors to the team

Luke Shaw (Manchester United), Mount (Chelsea), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Saka (Arsenal), Kyle Walker (Manchester City), Trippier (Newcastle United)

The players mentioned above should play for England in the World Cup, but not necessarily start every game.

Foden and Saka are both very exciting young players with the potential to take LinkedIn Gran to glory.

Walker could have guaranteed a starter, but as he recovers from injury, there are questions about his health.

Team role player

Madison (Leicester City), Grealish (Manchester City), Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Ben White (Arsenal), Henderson (Liverpool), Wilson (Newcastle), Pope (Newcastle), Ramsdale (Arsenal), Cody (Wolves)

The players mentioned above may not get much playing time in Qatar, but if called, they have the quality it takes to excel.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's playing time has been strengthened in James' absence and he has the potential to make a difference; Grealish, Marcus Rashford and Maddison may not start many games but can make an impact off the bench.

Wilson may also not play much time in Qatar, but if England desperately need to score, he will make a difference.

Lucky player

Phillips (Manchester City), Gallagher (Crystal Palace), Deere (Tottenham Hotspur), Harry Maguire (Manchester United)

Phillips missed much of the season due to a shoulder injury and did not return until midweek when Manchester City played Chelsea. His health is a huge problem.

Gallagher has struggled for some time at Chelsea and the choice of Deere over Fikayo Tomori for the squad is debatable.

Harry Maguire almost lost his place at Manchester United and was lucky to have been selected for England.

Players who unfortunately missed out

James (Chelsea), Chilwell (Chelsea), Prowse (Southampton), Ivan Tony (Brentford), Fikayo Tomori (AC Milan)

James and Ben Chilwell would not have been left out if it were not for injuries, and they would have been key players for England.

Prowse and Tony have performed very well at Southampton and Brentford respectively over the past few years but unfortunately missed the game. Both could be useful if the game goes into a penalty shootout.

Fikayo Tomori's exclusion from the squad has been questioned quite a bit, knowing that the AC Milan defender is one of the best defenders in Serie A in the 2021/22 Serie A championship season.
