If everything is too much where it seems appropriate, I have to break it all and throw it off balance... I believe in broken paintings" (Les Rogers)
Les Rogers (b. 1966) is a New York-area artist whose unique approach to painting demonstrates a decades-long exploration of an increasingly media-saturated world. Mainly engaged in oil painting, his sensitivity to our broken reality is reflected in his intuitive and spontaneous approach to painting, where historical influences collide and transform in unstable painting spaces.
In his mixed style of images, Rogers' preference for pictorial tradition contradicts his equally desire to destabilize the image, and the work shows a kind of provocation and disrespect, so his work has been described as "postmodern". As he explains, "[My paintings] are built on this inclusive, encyclopedic, more comprehensive annual record — you could call it Proustian — because there is so much content covered, my work tends to jump wildly." Even when you see these works 20 years later, they represent their own unique style. ”
Rogers has had solo exhibitions at Leo Koenig Inc. (New York, NY); Galerie Suzanne Tarasieve (Paris); Allouche Benias (Greece); Semi Gallery (New York, New York); Peter Makebish (New York, NY); Happy Lion (Los Angeles, CA); Galerie Christina Wilson (Copenhagen, Denmark); Galerie Michael Janssen (Cologne, Germany); Karlheinz Meyer (Karlsruhe, Germany), Eleni Koroneu (Greece), Maisterra Valbuena (Spain) and Galeria Marabini (Italy), among others.
Les Rogers currently lives and works in New Jersey.
