Simon's real popularity with fans began in the 2008 season, when he rose to prominence at the end of the season, knocking out Nadal and others in Madrid to reach the final, losing to Murray to finish second.
He also competed in the ATP year-end finals as ranked ninth in the world (substitute for Nadal), defeating Federer and Stepanek in the group stage to advance to the semifinals.
Simon's first career title came at the 2007 Marseille Open, and the French veteran last reached the top of the Tour at the Pune Open in 2018, and last reached the Tour Men's Singles Final in the 2019 Queen's Cup, when he and F. López fought hard in three sets and lost.
On 5 January 2009, Simon reached a career-high sixth in the world rankings, but he only stayed in that position for a week.

Simon's first Grand Slam singles tournament was at the 2005 French Open, and his last Grand Slam appearances were at this year's French Open, where he defeated Busta and Johansen in the third round in successive victories over Busta and Johansen, before being eliminated by Cilic in three sets.
Throughout the French veteran's decades-long Grand Slam journey, his best record in this division was two men's singles quarterfinals, and more often he was out early in the first few rounds.
At the 2009 Australian Open, Simon played as the No. 6 seed, eliminating Andujar, Gucione, Ansić and Monfils all the way to the quarterfinals, eventually being defeated in three sets by top-seeded Nadal in the quarterfinals.
At Wimbledon 2015, Simon appeared at Wimbledon as the 12th seed in the tournament, eventually defeating Almagro, Kafsić, Memphils and Bertic, reaching the Grand Slam singles quarterfinals for the second time in his career.
Helplessly, the 1/4 final met the giant players again, facing the No. 2 seed Federer, Simon was eliminated by his opponent with a score of 3-6 5-7 2-6.
