The Kitakyushu serial imprisonment murder case is one of the most famous criminal cases in Japanese history. The main culprit, Matsunaga, committed 20 years of domestic violence and mental manipulation on his wife Junko Ogata, making Junko his accomplice. Between 1996 and 1998, the two imprisoned, abused and killed a total of seven people, six of whom were relatives of Junko.

Even more heinous is that Matsunaga not only makes them willing to endure abuse, but also makes them spy on each other, snitch, and even kill each other by blood.

The author of this book, Masayoshi Toyoda, mainly uses Junko Ogata's testimony and confession, supplemented by the trial confession of the main culprit Matsunaga, and the prosecutor's summary statement, etc., to record the whole picture of the case as "truthfully and plainly" as possible.

First, dangerous relationships

1. Matsunaga was born in 1961 in Ogurakita-ku, Kitakyushu City, northeastern Japan. Matsunaga has been assertive since he was a child, and he loves to show and brag. After graduating from high school, he inherited his own company, and his actual business was fraud. He is particularly good at figuring out other people's minds, is also very good at talking and giving to his liking, and has many lovers.

2. Junko Ogata was born in 1962 in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, northern Kyushu, to a prominent family in the village, and her parents had a good reputation in the local area, known for their duty, diligence and strictness. Junko and her sister Rieko also received a good and rigorous education.

3. In the summer of 1980, Matsunaga called Junko to make an appointment. In 1982, the two began dating.

4. In 1984, the extramarital affair between the two was exposed and opposed by the parents of the pure child. But Matsunaga's outstanding young man's drama easily conquered the Ogata family. Shortly thereafter, Matsunaga began to commit violence against Junko. Junko's self-esteem is gradually destroyed and she no longer resists. Matsunaga also forced Junko to call relatives and friends to read out the foul words Matsunaga had written on the note beforehand, and the enraged relatives and friends gradually cut off contact with Junko.

5. American psychologist Dr. Judith Herman believes that the indispensable condition for completely enslaved a person is to make the victim powerless and severe. The final stage of psychological manipulation can only be completed if the victim is allowed to break his own ethical code with his own hands and sever his most basic social ties.

6. In February 1985, Junko attempted suicide by slitting her wrists at home. Matsunaga convinces Junko's parents to take full care of Junko by herself, and Junko descends into a violent hell.

7. In 1992, Matsunaga and Junko were arrested by the Japanese police on charges of fraud and other charges, and the two went into exile to Kokura and began to search for the "gold owner".

Second, the first victim

1. Kiyoshi Hattori was born in 1961, divorced, has a daughter, Kyoko, and works as a salesperson in a real estate agency. Matsunaga pretended to start a horse racing prediction company with Kiyoshi. Kiyoshi has since changed as a person.

2. In 1994, Kiyoshi first took his then 10-year-old daughter Kyoko to live in the company dormitory, and also signed an agreement with Matsunaga to entrust her to raise her daughter on her behalf. Not long after, Kiyoshi was fired from the company and moved into Matsunaga's M apartment in Kokura, where he began a life of imprisonment and abuse.

3. Matsunaga electrocutes Kiyoshi and instructs Junko and Kyoko to abuse Kiyoshi and impose various restrictions on Kiyoshi's life in order to make money from Kiyoshi. Kiyoshi borrowed about 10 million yen to Matsunaga. After Kiyoshi lost money, Matsunaga's abuse of him escalated.

4. Why didn't Kiyoshi resist?

(1) There is a handle in Matsunaga's hand;

(2) Long-term electric shocks and captivity may put Kiyoshi in a state of "learned helplessness".

5. On February 26, 1996, Kiyoshi died of physical exhaustion. Kyoko and Junko, under Matsunaga's guidance, begin to dismember Kiyoshi's body and throw it into the sea or public toilets at night.

6. In April 1997, Junko escaped, but was tricked back by her family and Matsunaga. The author speculates that Matsunaga should have told the Ogata family that Junko killed Kiyoshi and dismembered him. And with the Ogata family's face-loving characteristics, they chose to cooperate with Matsunaga in order to maintain their reputation.

Third, a murdered family

1. From April to July 1997, the Ogata family gave Matsunaga a total of 13.5 million yen, or about 670,000 yuan. In August, the Ogata family mortgaged the land and house and borrowed 30 million yen from the agricultural cooperative, all of which was given to Matsunaga.

In September 1997, relatives of the Ogata family tried to use legal procedures to prevent Yu Ogata from continuing to sell his ancestral property and provided the police with clues about the whereabouts of Matsunaga and Junko.

From October to November 1997, Junko's brother-in-law Lordya, sister Rieko and Junko's father, Yu Ogata, resigned at Matsunaga's behest. Meanwhile, the Ogata family's bank account was emptied, and the police later discovered that Junko's mother, Shizumi Ogata, had taken out the maximum loan from various loan sharks. By this time, Matsunaga had extorted at least 63 million yen, or more than 3 million yuan, from the Ogata family. But the Ogata family can't borrow more money, and the use value is over.

4. How does Matsunaga control the Ogata family?

(1) Make the Ogata family accomplices;

(2) sowing discord;

(3) Hierarchy sequence. The sequence is constantly changing, which makes everyone in the Ogata family dare not relax in the slightest, they are competitors to each other, and there is hostility between relatives.

The hierarchical ordering, combined with the electricity, gave the Ogata family a collective mental mindset in which they lost their self-judgment and made Matsunaga's instructions absolutistic and Matsunaga's interests the best term.

5. On 21 December 1997, Junko's father, Yu Ogata, died after being electrified and later dismembered by his family.

From January to June 1998, Junko's mother, sister, brother-in-law, and her sister's two children died.

In March 2002, Kyoko fled and the case came to light.

7. In 2005, the court sentenced the main culprits Matsunaga and Junko Ogata to death in the first instance.

Regarding Junko's sentencing, there is controversy. Yoji Nakatani, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Tsukuba, believes that the changes in Junko's behavioral tendencies and values after meeting Matsunaga are typical of women who have been abused by domestic violence. In addition, years of abuse make it difficult for Junko to act rationally when committing crimes and avoid killing others.

8. At the second instance in 2007, the judge still found Matsunaga to be the mastermind of the case and sentenced him to death. The second-instance judgment recognized the impact of domestic violence such as electric shocks, and found that Junko's judgment would be reduced as a result, and Junko was sentenced to life imprisonment after her arrest provided important clues.

9. In 2011, the Supreme Court of Japan rejected the appeal of the main culprit, Matsunaga, finding that although Junko was the perpetrator of the killing, it was difficult for her to disobey Matsunaga's orders, so Matsunaga was the mastermind in the case and upheld her death sentence.
