Lou Pei| "In order to save cultural heritage, pass on the torch" - Gu Tinglong recommended Shen Wenzhuo as a doctoral supervisor

author:Wenhui.com

Gu Tinglong specifically pointed out at the end of the letter: "At present, there are very few people who study and treat the "Ritual", they have become extinct, and there are few successors." In July 1986, Shen Wenzhuo was appointed as the doctoral supervisor of Chinese classical philology, and was also the only doctoral supervisor in the direction of "Pre-Qin Etiquette Research" at that time.

Recently read the ninety-six-year-old Professor of the Institute of Ancient Books of Zhejiang University, Mr. Xue Ke's book "Old Record of Feeling of Lakes and Mountains" (Zhonghua Book Co., 2021), which includes an article "Shen Wenzhuo, Qian Nanyang, Zhu Jihai - The Past of "Talent Introduction", which begins by saying: "In the early sixties of last century, Secretary Jiao Mengxiao of Zhejiang Teachers College attached great importance to the introduction of talents, and once called me to do some investigation of the academic achievements of Mr. Shen Fengsheng Wenzhuo and Qian Nanyang Shaoji, and wrote written materials to report to the Party Committee for reference. ...... At that time, Shen Gong worked at the Shanghai Library as the deputy director of the cataloguing team, responsible for compiling the "Comprehensive Catalogue of Chinese Books", especially the skills and achievements of the editor-in-chief "Jingbu", which had considerable influence in the academic community. Through literature search, it was learned that he specialized in the study of the three rites, especially in the "Etiquette", in order to seek education, with the consent of the leaders, he went to Shanghai to meet with Gu Tinglong, director of the Shanghai Library, and Pan Jingzheng, the second elder, and was cordially received by the second elder. The second elder knew that Shen Gong was Dinghai Huang and passed on by Zhou, and was trained by the famous scholar Mr. Cao Yuanbi, and his etiquette achievements were also praised by Mr. Gu Jiegang. In the picture above, his etiquette attainment could not be used, so he was not exempt from his talent, and strongly recommended him to enter the Zhejiang Teachers Academy. Ask long and short questions, in a word, can you be hired as a professor. I honestly replied: I am an ordinary teacher in the school, and I am not qualified to promise anything, but I know that at present, the school does not have the right to hire its own professors, and I have to wait for the opportunity and go through the procedures, but I will try to ensure their salary and treatment after entering the school. To tell the truth, I got the approval of Gu and Pan Erlao. ”

The page also contains a photocopy of Mr. Gu Tinglong (Qi Qian, 1904-1998), and the "Complete Works of Gu Tinglong and Letters Volume" (Shanghai Lexicon Publishing House, 2017) did not see this letter, and Shen Jin's "Gu Tinglong Chronology" (Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House, 2004) was lost, so it is worth a little ink and a little examination, and the first explanation is as follows:

Comrade Shen Wenzhuo was trained by Mr. Cao Yuanbi, a famous three-rite scholar in Suzhou in the late Qing Dynasty (original note: Guangxu Jinshi of the Qing Dynasty, specially edited by the Hanlin Academy, and appointed as a librarian by the Jiangsu Provincial Museum of Culture and History in the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China), and has a deep knowledge in writing, phonology, and precepts. For a long time, he has studied the study of "etiquette". "Rituals" is an ancient book that must be read for the study of the pre-Qin code system and folk customs. However, this book is far away from ancient times, and there are few scholars engaged in this study in the Qing Dynasty, and there are only more than 40 monographs on "Rituals". Comrade Shen has been diligent and devoted to Sistology for decades, and has not changed his degree. In 1947, after meeting and talking, Professor Gu Jiegang of my family was extremely admired, and he immediately recommended him to the National Compilation Museum to take charge of the work of scripture and collation. In 1958, the Shanghai Library edited the "Comprehensive Catalogue of Chinese Books", and served as the chief editor of some categories, which was revised in the category, which was praised by the catalogers. In recent years, he has unearthed Han Jian, engaged in the work of examination and proofreading, and is the author of books such as ""Li" Han Jian Different Language Interpretation", "Narration of Jing Yan [Li]", "Han Jian "Chuan Biography" Examination" and other books (original note: essays and other writings). Writing a monograph with new materials and new ideas has something beyond the sages. In order to save cultural heritage and pass on the torch, it is urgent to recruit doctoral students to teach this study, and Mr. Shen Wenzhuo is specially recommended as the doctoral supervisor. Please review.

December 1985 Gu Tinglong (Original note: Honorary Director of Shanghai Library, Adjunct Professor of East China Normal University and Fudan University, Consultant of Ancient Books Collation and Publication Planning Group)

Mr. Shen Wenzhuo (1917-2009), character Fengsheng, in his later years, self-named Jingyan, a native of Wujiang, Jiangsu. When he was a child, he learned the "Four Books" and "Zuo Chuan" from Yuan Hanqing, a famous scholar and calligrapher of the Southern Society, and learned ancient poetry and ancient Chinese words from the poet Shen Changzhi of the Southern Society, and later read the Seventeen Histories from the famous scholar and poet Jin Tianhui. At the age of 20, he audited a literature and history course at Nanjing Central University for nearly two years. Since 1940, he has been a teacher of Cao Yuanbi, a master of scripture who was edited by the former Qinghanlin Academy, once served as the head of the Lianghu Academy in Hubei Province, and the chief teacher of the Cungu Academy of Scriptures. At the same time, he once received Lu Wang's study from Yao Tingjie, a scholar in the hidden village, which initially reflected his academic characteristics of turning to many teachers and being self-reliant.

In 1944, Wang Yong (Yizhong) was hired by Ye Gongxiu to edit "All Five Dynasties and Ten Chinese Languages" at the Shanghai United Library, and Yuan Hongshou, the son of Yuan Hanqing, introduced Shen Wenzhuo to serve as an assistant. Mr. Gu Tinglong also worked for the museum at the time, and was employed by Jin Tianhui, and became an old friend of Wang Yong, thus becoming a new acquaintance with Shen Wenzhuo. According to the newly published "Gu Tinglong's Diary" (compiled by Li Jun and Shi Yuanguang, Zhonghua Book Company, 2022), recorded on February 25, 1944: "Use the intermediary Shen Fengsheng to help him. On August 7 of the same year, the article read: "Shen Wenzhuo presented the "Xinlu Posthumous Poem". This book was written by Ling Si of the Wujiang clan in the late Qing Dynasty, and was later compiled by Shen Tingyong and others, engraved in the third year of the Republic of China (1914), and also recorded in the "China Series of Books, Compilation, and Sole Authorship (Republic of China)". November 25, 1945 article: "Wang Yizhong, handed over Shen Fengsheng (Wen Zhuo) "Wax Lakao", and planned to cast Jie Gang's "Journal of Literature and History". According to the "Complete Works and Letters of Gu Tinglong", Gu Tinglong wrote to Gu Jiegang on December 11, talking about this matter:

Shen Wenzhuo (Feng Sheng, Cao Yuanbi, Jin Tianfeimen, and Wujiang Luxuan), a friend of Yizhong, wrote the article "Wax Lakao", which was published in the newspaper "Journal of Literature and History" and moved to Shanghai, which was transferred by the dragon. Because of this, the situation of the dragon is unknown, and it is specially sent separately, presumably the public will be able to publish it. Shen Jun tried to help Zhong Wei Factory to compile the "All Five Dynasties Wen", that is, to work in our museum, and those who met each other day and night for two months, were extremely sincere, and engaged in the study of "Three Rites", which is not much to do today.

Gu Jiegang replied to Youyun on January 23, 1946: "I was given a book before, and I sent Mr. Shen's "Wax Lakao" to my feelings. The Three Rites have become a master, and Mr. Shen has been taught by a famous teacher, and the analysis of modernization has benefited from later learning, which is good and admirable. (See "The Complete Works of Gu Jiegang, Gu Jiegang's Letters and Letters", China Book Company, 2011) However, the "Journal of Literature and History" edited by Gu Jiegang was soon suspended for some reason, and Shen Wenhou published the supplement of the eighth edition of the "Wen Wei Po" on October 15, 1946 under the title "Wax" and "La", and successively published articles such as "Zuo Chuan Du Zhu Supplement Correction", "Commenting on the Study and Politics of the Western Han Dynasty", "Speaking of Gao Yu", and "A Brief Discussion on "Rituals" and Shan Shu", which attracted Gu Jiegang's attention. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Gu and Shen had meetings and discussions. At that time, the National Compilation Museum had moved back to Nanjing from Chongqing, and Gu recommended Shen Wenzhuo as the collator of the museum's "Three Rites" special scripture, and Shen He was hired as an associate editor and reviewer, mainly responsible for compiling summaries of scriptures, drafting dictionaries of scriptures, and proofreading "Analects of Justice" and "Mencius Justice". In the letter, "In 1947, when Professor Gu Jiegang of my family met and talked, he was extremely admired and immediately recommended to the National Compilation Museum to take charge of the work of studying and sorting out the scriptures."

By April 1949, the library affairs of the National Compilation Museum were suspended, and Shen Wenzhuo still focused on the study of etiquette and scripture, writing articles such as "Shi Tu", and also wrote the "Zhou Dynasty Urban Life Map" compilation and drawing plan, and asked Gu Jiegang to find relevant materials. On May 11, 1951, Gu wrote to Gu Tinglong: "Mr. Shen Fengsheng is proficient in etiquette, and now plans to compile the "Map of Ancient Life". Not long after, Shen Wenzhuo, who had studied at the Institute of Political Science of North China People's Revolutionary University in Beijing for half a year, was assigned to work in the Shanghai Library under the Shanghai Cultural Relics Management Committee, and he was also frequently seen in Gu Tinglong's Diary, such as July 13, 1951: "Talking with Wen Zhuo, I would like to ask me to make a preliminary classification of the book fragments." July 14: "Please ask Shen Wenzhuo to make a preliminary classification of the books received from 1943 to June 1951 and keep them for meals." Qu can have a month or two to work temporarily for this also. Quotient summary outline. July 15: "Outline is proposed, please amend it." "November 2: "Draft report, Jowen Zhuo business change." December 11: "Jo Wen Zhuo came to discuss the draft plan. The next day: "At night, invite Wen Zhuo and Zu Chang to guide the study and discuss the outline." January 6, 1952: "(Qu) Fengqi and Wen Zhuo came. January 13: "Wen Zhuo came, belongs to the introduction of the rental house, allowed." ”

On June 18, 1953, the United Library was donated to the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, and in 1954 it was renamed Shanghai Historical Documents Library. In 1958, the library was merged into the Shanghai Library, with Gu Tinglong as its director. In September 1959, the first volume of the "Comprehensive Catalogue of Chinese Books" edited by Gu Tinglong and edited by the Shanghai Library was published by the Shanghai Editorial Office of the China Book Co., Ltd., and all of them were completed by 1962. During the same period, Shen Wenzhuo did not waste his research on etiquette, and published many related articles in newspapers and periodicals such as "Archaeology", "Cultural Relics", "Journal of Archaeology", and "Guangming Daily".

In 1952, when the departments of colleges and universities in the country were adjusted, part of the College of Arts and Science of Zhejiang University merged with the College of Arts and Sciences of Jiang University and Zhejiang Normal College to establish Zhejiang Normal College. In 1958, it merged with the newly established Hangzhou University and was named Hangzhou University. In 1998, it merged with Zhejiang University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University to form the new Zhejiang University. "Talent introduction" Shen Wenzhuo, in February 1963. After Shen was transferred to the newly established Language and Literature Research Office of Hangzhou University, although he did not have the professorship expected by Gu Tinglong and Pan Jingzheng, he engaged in full-time academic research, and he was full of wishes, and he gathered together with Xia Chengtao, Jiang Liangfu, Wang Caiwu, Hu Shiying, Ren Mingshan, Jiang Lihong and other academic masters to compose a new chapter. Later, during the special period, the research room was dissolved invisibly, and Shen Wenzhuo changed from a researcher to a data clerk in the Chinese department's data room. Since the Science Press published "Wuwei Han Jian" in 1965, Shen Wenzhuo has studied it repeatedly, and has been fascinated, and has successively written hundreds of thousands of words of works such as ""Li" Han Jian Different Interpretation", "Han Jian "Clothing Transmission" Examination", """Li" Han Jian Seven Articles for Ancient Chinese or Ben Kao", ""Li" Han Jian Non-Qingshi Sutra Text" and "Jing Yan Shu Li" and other hundreds of thousands of words, and compiled the first four papers as "Wuwei Unearthed "Li" Han Jian Examination Four Kinds of Identification", which was sent to Gu Jiegang in March 1975 for approval, and Gu's reply letter had "the first person to govern the ritual scriptures in this world" highly praised, Gu Tinglong's letter "In recent years, Han Jian has been unearthed, engaged in the work of examination and proofreading, and has written books such as """Li" Han Jian Different Language Interpretation", "Jing Yan Shu Li", "Han Jian "Service Transmission" Examination" and other books. Writing a monograph with new materials and new ideas, there are points beyond the previous sages", and can also be cross-referenced.

In 1979, Shen Wenzhuo returned to the research position of the Language and Literature Research Office, and the following year he was named an associate researcher. "Gu Tinglong Chronology" July 8, 1981 article has a cloud: "Shen Wenzhuo of Hangzhou University has not seen him for many years, and he will talk about it. In 1982, Shen began to recruit and train master's students in ancient Chinese literature in the pre-Qin direction. In 1983, he was transferred to the newly established Institute of Ancient Books of Hangzhou University and promoted to professor. In June 1985, at the invitation of Gu Tinglong, Shen Wenzhuo went to Shanghai to preside over the defense of the master's thesis "Sun Yirang Collation Research" of East China Normal University. Gu Tinglong pointed out at the end of the letter that "at present, there are very few people studying and curing the "Ritual", it has become a school extinct, and there is a lack of successors, in order to save the cultural heritage, the torch is passed down from generation to generation, it is urgent to recruit doctoral students to teach this study, and Mr. Shen Wenzhuo is specially recommended as the doctoral supervisor." After being reviewed by the Academic Committee of the State Council and approved by the Ministry of Education, Shen Wenzhuo was selected as a doctoral supervisor in Chinese classical philology in July 1986, and was also the only doctoral supervisor in the direction of "Pre-Qin Etiquette Research" at that time.

Shen Wenzhuo's research results in etiquette and scripture have been published in magazines such as "Wenshi", "Chinese Literature and History Series", and "Literature", which have caused great influence in the academic circles. The Justice of Mencius, which he compiled in his early years at the National Compilation Museum, was also published by Chung Hwa Book Company in 1987. "Gu Tinglong Chronology" August 13, 1988: "Shen Wenzhuo came, gave him punctuation to follow Mencius Justice". "In 1999, Shen Wenzhuo's first research monograph "The Examination of Zongzhou Lile Civilization" was launched by Hangzhou University Press, and its writing span of more than 40 years, although it was only composed of fourteen papers, but each article was reasonable, persistent, discovered or invented, which is an indispensable classic work in the field of etiquette research, and also established Shen's lofty position as a generation of etiquette masters after his teacher Cao Yuanbi. Mr. Gu Tinglong's letter recommending Shen Wenzhuo as a doctoral supervisor is like an academic biography to Mr. Shen, with a concise narrative and conciseness, outlining an important vein in the inheritance of modern etiquette, and also composing a good story of the unswerving friendship between the two scholars for more than half a century.
