Barcelona midfielder and Spain international Garvey won the 2022 Golden Boy Award and also won the Copa Cup at this week's Ballon d'Or.
Garvey made a name for himself a year ago with his meteoric rise to club and national teams, attracting the attention of world football. He beat competition from Bellingham, Musiara and Camavinga, as well as 10 or candidates from Premier League clubs, to win the award.
The Golden Boy Award, an award given to the best youngster under the age of 21 in the Euroleague, began in 2003. Barca midfielder Pedri is once again in this year's shortlist, having won the award last year, with past winners including Erin Haaland, Lionel Messi, Killian Mbapp and Wayne Rooney.
Garvey initially started his career at Real Betis, joining FC Barcelona in 2015 at the age of 11. After training in La Masia's teams of all ages, in the 2021-22 season, he was promoted to the first team by then-Barca coach Koeman and made his first-team debut.
The 18-year-old has made 61 first-team appearances for Braugrana and has become an important part of the squad. Garvey, like Pedri, who also became famous at a young age, is ahead of Frenchman De Jong in Xavi's team appearances and is an important part of the team's starting line-up.
Garvey has also become a regular in the Spanish national team, having made 12 appearances for the Spanish national team, and coach Luis Enrique takes him very seriously. Just like at the club, he has beaten a number of more experienced and talented players to win the main position in the national team.
Premier League players nominated for the award include Liverpool midfielder Elliott and Manchester United's Diallo, who is currently on a one-year loan deal with Sunderland. In the end, however, Garvey won the crown and earlier this week he was also awarded the Coppa Cup, which he will receive at a ceremony in Turin on November 7.
The award was established in 2003 by Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport and the judges included sports journalists from all over Europe. Each juror can nominate five players, and the jurors will assign 10 points to the players they deem most impressive, with 7 points in second place, 5 points in third place, 3 points in fourth and 1 point in fifth place.
