Early life
Catherine Bigelow was born in 1951 in California, USA. His mother was a library employee and his father was a paint factory manager.
Bigelow attended Mount Sonny High School in Fullerton, California. Her early aspiration was to become a painter. He entered the San Francisco Institute of the Arts in the fall of 1970 and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in December 1972. During this time, she was admitted to the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. For a time, Bigelow lived a poor life as an artist, living with the painter Julian Schnabel in the attic of the performing artist Vito Aconsi.
After that, Bigelow enrolled in graduate film at Columbia University and earned a master's degree. Her professors include Vito Acconci, Sylvère Lotringer and Susan Sontag, as well as Andrew Sarris and Edward W.Said. Bigelow also teaches at the California Institute of the Arts.

Bigelow's films cover a wide range of genres, including Night of the Bloody Corpse (1987), Breaking Point (1991), Apocalypse Riot (1995), K-19: The Widow Maker (2002), Bomb Disposal Unit (2008), The Hunt for Bin Laden (2012), and Detroit (2017).
With the release of "Bomb Disposal Force", Bigelow became the first and only woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director.

She has also won the Directors Guild of America Outstanding Director Award, the British Film and Television Academy Award for Best Director and the Film Critics Choice Award for Best Director. In 1995, Bigelow won the Saturn Award for Best Director for The Last Tide.
Personal life
From 1989 to 1991, Bigelow had a marriage with director James Cameron.
Bigelow partnered with Philip Glass to set up a real estate business that renovates dilapidated apartments in the city center and sells them for profit.
