Baseball Of History

  • Baseball games as we know it evolved from rules laid down by the New York Knicker bock club between 1845 and 1857, when 17 clubs attended the meeting that produced the National Association of Baseball Players (NABBP).
  • Alexander P. Alexander J. Cartwright, a bookseller and founder of the Knickerbocker Club, is believed to have 14 rules, including three outs to close a bat, the concept of a foul ball, the use of the verb "to throw" instead of the then-current term for the verb "throw." William Wheaton, another founder of the Knickerbocker Club, may have been one of the fathers of these rules. During the 1857 Convention, the club also established a base, a 90-foot distance between a 9-man team and 9 innings.
  • In Nick Bock's view, pitchers should pass the ball under their hands. It was not until 1884, under the influence of the way the state of Massachusset was played, that the overhand pitch was introduced.
  • The Corona community of Queens, New York, hosted its first fee-based competition in 1858.
  • The Massachussets game and the version of the game played in Philadelphia, called Town Ball, are still pastime. With the help of the Civil War, the Nick Bock game expanded to more than 100 clubs in 1865.

Softball Of History

  • When George Hancock saw someone hit a boxing glove with a broom handle inside Chicago's Farragut Boat Club, he shouted "Let's play with the ball." He just had a vision — it was indoor baseball. The main adjustment must come from pitch. In 1884, baseball had just turned to hand pitching, but indoors, it had to be done under the hands.
  • Hancock is a journalist for the Chicago Board of Trade. On Thanksgiving Day 1887, he was awaiting the outcome of the annual soccer game between Yale and Harvard. The man who threw the boxing gloves was an alumnus of Yale University who intended to celebrate the 17-8 victory. The batsman is an alumnus of Harvard University and intends to return the gloves. But he hit it hard and sent it above the heads of his Yale friends.

The first rule

  • Hancock went on to publish the Indoor Baseball Guide and took the game outdoors the following summer. Indoors/outdoors are played on a baseball field that is not large enough. By 1889, Hancock had developed a set of rules.

Albert Spalding

  • In 1907, Albert Spalding published his Indoor Baseball. A rulebook published in 1908 states that the first batsman in each inning decides which direction to run after hitting.
