In the autumn night scene, the beautiful chirping of crickets rises and falls, which is a signal for the courtship of male crickets. In fact, crickets do not have a pronunciation organ, and its forewings are thicker, becoming compound wings, and the friction between the inside of the compound wings will make sounds.
As early as 1913, Vienna secondary school teacher Johan Reagan conducted an experiment in which the chirp of the male cricket was transmitted to the female cricket through the newly invented telephone, and the female cricket heard the chirp and climbed to the front of the telephone. This proves that the female crickets do hear the chirping of the male crickets.
So how do female crickets hear their chirps? German physiological research scientists have found that the male crickets sound at a frequency of 5 kHz for 15 to 20 milliseconds, which is a 4-syllable string that is repeated 2 to 4 times per second. Studies have found that the auditory organs of crickets are similar to those of humans. Crickets have ears that grow under the knees of the two forefoots, and a pair of eardrums are arranged with 55 to 60 auditory receptor cells to form a nerve bundle, that is, the auditory nerve. This auditory nerve corresponds to the frequency of 5 kHz of male crickets.
Acoustic scientists believe that the two ears of the female cricket's forefoot are only about 1 cm apart, and the wavelength of the two frequencies of 5 kHz is about 7 cm. According to this principle, female crickets cannot hear the chirping of male crickets. However, the organ system of the female cricket can significantly increase the difference in sound between the ears, so that the resonance frequency is close to the male cricket song frequency of the organ system evolved into a directional auditory auxiliary organ. So although the two ears of the female cricket are only about 1 centimeter apart, they can still hear the courtship chirp of the male cricket.
