Chen Jingrun, a graduate of Xiamen University, has made great contributions to the history of mathematics in China, placing a statue of him on campus in the hope of inspiring more students to love mathematics and study mathematics.
Chen Jingrun was born in 1933 in Minhou County, Fujian Province. His father was the director of the provincial post office, and his mother was responsible for the household affairs, because there were three children in the family, including Chen Jingrun, and he had an older brother and an older sister.
Among the three children in the family, Chen Jingrun is the quietest, and he does not like to talk more than his sister. Chen Jingrun likes to sit alone in the corner, holding a book, reading quietly, and in the eyes of outsiders, he is very silent.
After going to school, Chen Jingrun's family unexpectedly found that his results in each test were particularly excellent, especially his math scores.
In February 1948, Chen Jingrun was admitted to the spring class of Fuzhou Yinghua High School with excellent results, which is now the Affiliated Middle School of Fujian Normal University. During this period, Chen Jingrun's family found that he was indeed very talented in mathematics, and he himself was willing to spend the most time studying mathematics.
His taciturn personality makes Chen Jingrun a little different from other children of the same age, but this does not affect his life.
In his leisure time, Chen Jingrun would go to the school library alone to read books, but most of the books he read were related to mathematics, such as "Introduction to Higher Algebra" and "Duff Physics", which were books that made other children of the same age feel headaches.
His excellent grades soon made Chen Jingrun stand out from the crowd, especially his far-ahead math scores and unique understanding of mathematics. When Chen Jingrun was in his third year of high school, the teachers in the school introduced him to the Department of Mathematics and Physics of Xiamen University, and soon he was admitted in advance by the Department of Mathematics and Physics of Xiamen University.
Different from high school, Chen Jingrun benefited a lot in the years of studying in the Department of Mathematics and Physics of Xiamen University. There is a very important reason why Chen Jingrun is well known to the entire mathematical community, that is, the introduction of his mentor Hua Luogeng.
During his studies at Xiamen University, Chen Jingrun published many thought-provoking papers, and his math teachers were repeatedly shocked, and even many questions did not know how to answer, and then Chen Jingrun took some papers to Hua Luogeng to see.
Chen Jingrun's unique insight into mathematics immediately attracted the attention of Hua Luogeng, and in the process of exchanging mathematical problems between the two people, Chen Jingrun has always called Hua Luogeng a teacher.
Hua Luogeng seemed to see his young self in Chen Jingrun's body, did not care about anything, and focused on studying mathematical problems. With a book of mathematical materials, you can do nothing all day, look at it like a drunkard, and forget to eat.
In September 1957, because of Hua Luogeng's introduction, Chen Jingrun went to the Chinese Academy of Sciences to conduct research work. During this time at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chen Jingrun's research reached a new height.
In 1965, Chen Jingrun published a paper entitled "Expressing the Sum of The Product of An Even Number as a Prime Number and a Number Not Exceeding Two Prime Numbers", which caused great repercussions in the mathematical community. Later known as "Chen's theorem" by the international mathematical community, Chen Jingrun's discovery made a great contribution to the study of the Goldbach conjecture.
In the eyes of everyone, Chen Jingrun seems to be a bit too wooden, and only when studying mathematics will there be emotional fluctuations.
In the years of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chen Jingrun spent a lot of time every day calculating mathematical problems and studying mathematical problems, often day and night upside down, or relying on the dim kerosene lamp, learning all night. It was such high-intensity research work that dragged down his body.
But no one expected that this hospitalization experience would make Chen Jingrun meet a loved one.
In 1978, Chen Jingrun came to 309 Hospital for physical conditioning due to overwork, and it was during this period that he met Yu Kun, who came to 309 Hospital for internship.
At a quick glance, Chen Jingrun seemed to experience the feeling of love at first sight, which was simply unforgettable for him, a person who focused on mathematics.
Subsequently, Chen Jingrun began to pursue Yu Kun. Although Chen Jingrun has never had the experience of pursuing girls, and sometimes he can't say a word for half a day, he really uses the tenacity of his research on mathematical problems on Yu Kun's body.
However, at the beginning, they were all politely rejected by Yukun, perhaps because there was a big gap between the two people's ages and jobs.
Later, Chen Jingrun expressed his heart to Yukun very directly, "I will continue to pursue you, if you have not planned to agree, then I will not get married for the rest of my life." ”
Yu Kun herself did not expect that this taciturn nerd would say such touching words, even the coldest heart would be moved, and in this way, she agreed to Chen Jingrun's pursuit.
When Chen Jingrun was 47 years old, he and Yu Kun became married. Chen Jingrun, who used to make the study of mathematics his life's mission, finally has a happy family of three.
However, in the third year after Chen Jingrun and Yu Kun became married, Chen Jingrun suffered a car accident and has suffered from Parkinson's syndrome since then, and his condition has not improved.
He had a son and also had a talent for mathematics
In 1981, Chen Jingrun and Yu Kun's son was born, and the family was overjoyed. Chen Jingrun named his son Chen Youwei, took his own surname "Chen", and then took Yu Kun's surname "Yu", which is enough to see Chen Jingrun's love for his wife Yu Kun and his sustenance for his son.
Chen Youwei is very different from Chen Jingrun in personality, lively and cheerful, and has his own ideas. Perhaps inheriting some mathematical talents from his father Chen Jingrun, Chen Youwei is also very talented in learning mathematics, but the teenager Chen Youwei does not want to become like his father, he wants to do something he really likes.
Chen Youwei said that because his father was a mathematician, people often inquired about his mathematical achievements. People often ask him, "You must be doing well in math, right?" Your father was the mathematician Chen Jingrun. ”
People will also ask, "You're going to study math later, like your father..." or, "Math problems in school are simple for you." Chen Youwei was often asked these questions, which made him feel a little difficult to answer.
Chen Youwei is indeed very talented in mathematics, but he also wants to choose something else that interests him, not like because his father Chen Jingrun is a mathematician, he also wants to become a mathematician.
When Chen Youwei was a teenager, Yu Kun and Chen Jingrun also enrolled him in a math cram school, but Chen Youwei was very reluctant to this compulsory study. Later, at Chen Youwei's own choice, he enrolled in some study classes on music and art, and he did not want to be forced to study mathematics.
For these choices of Chen Youwei, Chen Jingrun said that he is not angry, he respects his son's choice very much, and he also hopes that his son can become a person with his own ideas. Later, Chen Youwei chose to major in liberal arts, and after studying in Canada, Chen Youwei chose to study business.
In 1996, when Chen Youwei was 15 years old, Chen Jingrun died of Parkinson's syndrome.
After chen youwei went to Canada to study business for a year, he found that his grades had always been among the best, and his mathematical results were also excellent, so he decided to transfer to mathematics.
After consulting with his mother Yukun, Chen Youwei changed majors, and like his father, Chen Jingrun, he also spent all day in the library, flipping through mathematical materials.
Although mathematically more talented than the average student, it is still difficult to really study it as a major.
Before each exam review, Chen Youwei would take out a copy of "Number Theory" and slowly read it, as if his father Chen Jingrun was still sitting next to him to give him careful guidance.
There is a record of his father's "Chen's theorem", through the text it seems that Chen Jingrun can still be seen sitting under the dim kerosene lamp buried in the calculus, whenever this time, Chen Youwei will feel incomparably warm, in a foreign country and full of power.
Studying mathematics in Canada during this time was still very difficult for Chen Youwei, but fortunately, he could often be inspired by the library. Finally, at the insistence of Chen Youwei, he got a master's degree in mathematics.
Although his father Chen Jingrun is no longer there, he seems to be able to feel his dinging and teaching in the middle of countless hard nights.
Return to China to start a business Choose other industries
After returning to China, Chen Youwei did not continue to study his mathematics major, he wanted to try to do more different things, and later Chen Youwei also had the experience of working in the bank.
In 2019, the alumni of Xiamen University's 88th class held an alumni festival, and Chen Youwei was also invited to participate, once again to his father Chen Jingrun's alma mater, and his heart was quite touched.
Seeing the math students wearing volunteer red vests with the words "Jingrun Youth" written on them, Chen Youwei was even more moved, and he immediately joined in and became a member of the volunteers.
In 2006, Xiamen University placed a bronze statue of Chen Jingrun on the Haiyun Campus to encourage students to follow Chen Jingrun's example and study harder.
Looking at the bronze statue placed on the side, Chen Youwei seemed to really see his father smiling at himself, he sat next to the bronze statue, put his hand on it, and took a picture with his "father".
After returning from Canada, Chen Youwei has been working in a bank at first, and then chose to start his own business. Because Yukun had been working at 309 Hospital in Beijing before he retired, Chen Youwei thought that he had founded a medical company as if he had been predestined.
