author:China Green Development Association

On August 24, 2022, the vegetation remote sensing mechanism and pest application team led by Huang Wenjiang, a researcher at the Institute of Aerospace Information Innovation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, released the 8th Asian and African Desert Locust Monitoring and Assessment Report (Chinese and English versions) in 2022. As a co-publisher of the report, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation participated in the relevant research work.

The current issue is no. 35. Since 2020, the research team has worked with a number of scientific research institutions to continuously publish the monitoring and assessment report on the desert locust infestation in Asia and Africa (in Chinese and English). The team comprehensively used the US MODIS data and ESA Sentinel series satellite data, combined with meteorological data and ground plant protection survey data, combined with insect pest prediction and forecasting models, relying on the self-developed remote sensing monitoring and prediction system for vegetation diseases and insect pests, to carry out large-scale desert locust dynamic monitoring and assessment, and regularly publish insect pest remote sensing thematic maps and scientific reports online.

This issue focuses on dynamic updates on desert locust infestations in Yemen, Ethiopia and Pakistan. Remote sensing monitoring shows that the desert locust is mainly distributed in western Yemen, eastern Ethiopia and southeastern Pakistan, with a hazardous vegetation area of 57,100 hectares, 80,700 hectares and 23,479,200 hectares in Yemen, Ethiopia and Pakistan in July 2022, respectively. It is expected that from late August to September, locusts in the interior of Yemen and in the north-eastern part of Ethiopia will continue to spawn and multiply due to rainfall, resulting in a further increase in locust populations; Affected by the monsoon, most of the locusts in the southeastern part of Pakistan will spread eastward to the western part of India, resulting in an increase in the number of locusts in India; Moreover, this period is an important growing season and harvest season for food crops in Yemen and Pakistan, and the main growing season for food crops in Ethiopia, so it is still necessary to continue to pay attention to the dynamics of the desert locust infestation to prevent the repeated losses caused by the disaster to agricultural and animal husbandry production.

The "Monitoring and Assessment Report on Desert Locust Infestation in Asia and Africa" series of reports aims to help developing countries in Asia and Africa fight invasive alien species and defend food security through biodiversity big data. The results of the report are shared free of charge with developing countries such as Southeast Asia and Africa, helping them improve their control capabilities of desert locusts, supporting large-scale monitoring and early warning of biosecurity in Asia and Africa along the Belt and Road countries and regions with science and technology, and contributing wisdom to ensuring food security and sustainable development goals.
