Protea cynaroides, also known as monarch flowers, is the national flower of South Africa.

A perennial evergreen shrub with a thick stem, dry and hairless, alternating leaves, leathery, large, dark green, shiny leaves. Hermaphroditic, each plant can bloom 100 to 200 flowers. The flower resembles a flower ball with many flower buds in the center and is surrounded by large, colorful bracts. The diameter of the flower bulbs is 12 to 30 cm, and the flowering period is from May to December.

It is native to tropical Africa, including South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia.
