Located in the southwest of Taiwan Island, Kaohsiung has a population of about 2.73 million (2022), ranking second on The island.
Formerly known as Dagou Port, Kaohsiung Port is the largest port on Taiwan Island, with cargo throughput accounting for about half of Taiwan Island.
The bay area where Kaohsiung Port is located is a long and narrow bay, originally a lagoon with a total length of 12 km and a width of about 1 km to 1.5 km. The entrance is only 100 meters wide and resembles an opening. The water depth of the waterway and port area of Kaohsiung Port ranges from 11.3 meters to 17.6 meters, and the annual cargo throughput is 116.07 million tons (2017).
