Japan plans to re-release crested ibises in 2026

Japanese Environment Minister Yamaguchi announced after a cabinet meeting on May that the crested ibis, a special natural monument of Japan, would be reborn in two prefectures.

If the environment allows, Japan will release it as early as 2026.

Japan has selected two release sites, namely the Nengen Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture and Izumo City in Shimane Prefecture, and two places in Akita Prefecture and Miyagi Prefecture will be used as backup locations.

According to Japanese media reports, the Native Crested Ibises in Japan have become extinct as early as 2003, but the two crested ibises donated by China have been successfully bred in Japan, and they are also found in Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture.
