Wu, a senior male qualified nurse who witnessed this real scene, said that at the end of last year, a couple over 60 years old was admitted to the hospital for covid-19, and although they lived in different wards, they encouraged each other every day through video.

"Although the husband also had to be hospitalized for oxygen, his condition was relatively stable, while his wife's condition suddenly deteriorated and she was admitted to the intensive care unit."

The wife's condition worsened and she was on the verge of death, and the husband, who also suffered from the new crown, was pushed into the intensive care unit to guard it all night.

Wu said the woman's blood pressure was as low as 50/30 mm Hg at one point, and despite the maximum oxygen support given, her blood oxygen concentration was only 92.

"We tried artificial ventilation and other methods, she did not respond to our treatment, vital signs still deteriorated to the index of almost impossible survival, we have exhausted the method."

Once believing that the old woman would not survive, Wu and the team decided to make an exception to let her husband enter the intensive care unit to spend the last time with his wife.

"Usually he can't get into the intensive care unit because of safety concerns, but because they were hospitalized, we knew they had a good relationship and that was the last thing we could do for them."

The team pushed her husband, who was lying in his hospital bed, to the intensive care unit and left him by his side all night.

Wu wrote in Reflections on Nurses II: "He was at her side, holding her hand, stroking her hair, praying for her in the darkest hours. Her vital signs deteriorated to the point where it was impossible to survive, but he persevered. ”

To his and his team's surprise and disbelief, the old woman's situation took a big turn the next day.

"It's hard to explain scientifically, it's a miracle that the next day her blood pressure almost returned to normal levels, and slowly, she regained consciousness, usually her vital signs deteriorated to the point where she would have some brain damage, but she even recognized the people around her."

Wu said he was overjoyed that both were later discharged from the hospital. The couple's experience is one of the "best memories" he has had since his tenure at Alexandria Hospital.

Wu said he originally resisted being a nurse until he actually came into contact with patients. In the early days of the COVID-19 outbreak in Singapore, Wu and his team cared for the first COVID-19 patient in Alexandria Hospital to enter the intensive care unit, and the team's spirit of selfless dedication made him more determined to go on in this industry.

Wu said he didn't want to be a nurse in the first place and even rejected it when he entered the nursing department. However, when he first came into contact with real patients, he realized the meaning and greatness of the job.

"I was in contact with a stroke patient in the hospital, he couldn't take care of himself, he couldn't even take a bath independently, I did my best to take care of him. After that, I found that getting better and recovering patients day by day gave me a great deal of satisfaction, and I also found that men can be good nurses regardless of gender as long as they have empathy, knowledge and skills. ”

His 17 years as a nurse kept playing out stories that convinced him of this conviction.

"In March 2020, when Alexander Hospital had the first COVID-19 patient to enter the intensive care unit, everyone didn't know much about COVID-19 at that time, but no nurses flinched, and we all tried our best to take care of patients. We have also supported each other over the past two years and had challenging days.
