The first car the company produced was the 1910 24 HP, designed by Giuseppe Merosi. ALFA dabbled in motorsport, with drivers Franchini and Rozoni driving the 1911 Targa Florio in two 24-horsepower models. In August 1915, the company was instructed by the Neapolitan entrepreneur Nicola Romeo, who converted the factory into military hardware for use in Italy and the Allied wars. In 1920, the company name was changed to Alfa Romeo and the Torpedo 20-30 HP became the first car to bear this logo.
In 1921, Banca Italiana di Sconto, which supported Ing, was founded. Nicola Romeo & Co went bankrupt and the government needed to support the industrial companies involved through the "Consorzio per Sovvenzioni sui Valori Industriali", of which Alfa Romeo was one of them. The company struggled to regain profitability after World War II and shifted to mass-producing small cars rather than hand-crafting luxury models. In 1954, the Alfa Romeo twin-cam engine was developed and production continued until 1994. Istituto per la Ricostruzione (IRI), the state-owned enterprise group that controls Finmeccanica, sold the brand to fiat group in 1986 because it was unprofitable.
Alfa Romeo has been successful in Grand Prix, Formula One, Sports car, Motorhome race and Rally. It competes through engineering entries (usually under the name Alfa Corse or Autodelta) and private entries, both as a builder and as an engine supplier. The first car was built in 1913, three years after the company's founding, and Alfa Romeo won the inaugural Grand Prix Car World Championship in 1925. The victory of the race gave the brand a sporty image, and Enzo Ferrari founded the Scuderia Ferrari in 1929 as the Alfa Romeo racing team, followed by independence in 1939. It has the most wins of any brand in the world.
