author:China Green Development Association

On July 19, 2022, the vegetation remote sensing mechanism and pest application team led by Huang Wenjiang, a researcher at the Institute of Aerospace Information Innovation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, released the 7th Issue of 2022 Asian and African Desert Locust Monitoring and Assessment Report (Chinese and English versions). As a co-publisher of the report, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation participated in the relevant research work.

The current issue is Issue 34. Since 2020, the research team has worked with a number of scientific research institutions to continuously publish the monitoring and assessment report on the desert locust infestation in Asia and Africa (in Chinese and English). The team comprehensively uses satellite remote sensing data such as the domestic high score (GF) series, the UNITED MODIS and Landsat, the Eu Sentinel series, combined with meteorological data and ground plant protection survey data, and relies on the self-developed remote sensing monitoring and prediction system for vegetation diseases and insect pests to carry out remote sensing monitoring and prediction of desert locusts in Asia and Africa, and regularly publishes remote sensing thematic maps and scientific reports online.

This issue focuses on dynamic updates on desert locust infestations in Yemen, Ethiopia and Pakistan. Remote sensing monitoring shows that the desert locust is mainly distributed in western Yemen, eastern Ethiopia and southern Pakistan. In June 2022, the area of hazardous vegetation in Yemen, Ethiopia and Pakistan was 50,200 hectares, 5.70 hectares and 1,804.18 hectares, respectively.

It is expected that from mid-to-late July to August, there will be a small amount of precipitation in the western part of Yemen, and locusts will further multiply in the area, resulting in an increase in locust populations; With a small amount of precipitation in the eastern part of Ethiopia's Afar region, accompanied by green vegetation growth, part of the somali region will migrate northwest to Afar state during this period, and the number of locusts in Ethiopia is expected to increase; Affected by the monsoon, most of the locusts in the southeastern region of Pakistan will spread to the India-Pakistan border and multiply, and the locust population will increase; Moreover, this period is an important growing season for food crops in Yemen, and the main planting and growing season for food crops in Ethiopia and Pakistan, so it is still necessary to continue to pay attention to the dynamics of the desert locust plague to prevent repeated losses to agricultural and animal husbandry production.

The "Monitoring and Assessment Report on Desert Locust Infestation in Asia and Africa" series of reports aims to help developing countries in Asia and Africa fight invasive alien species and defend food security through biodiversity big data. The results of the report are shared free of charge with developing countries such as Southeast Asia and Africa, helping them improve their control capabilities of desert locusts, supporting large-scale monitoring and early warning of biosecurity in Asia and Africa's Belt and Road countries and regions with science and technology, and contributing wisdom to ensuring food security and sustainable development goals.
