The Romanian wild peony is a unique flower species in continental Europe and one of the oldest flower species in the country. There are 5 counties in Romania with wild peony reserves, Giulju, Dolj, Mureş, Del orman, and Olte.

In folk customs, the flower is often compared to the god of love, and associated with loyalty, sacrifice, and the blood of heroes, the Ministry of National Defense declared the wild peony as the national flower to commemorate the "Hero Day" on November 11 every year, in order to pay tribute to the officers and soldiers who died on the battlefield.
