McDermott issued a statement that reads as follows:

Dear Boxing Community, Friends and Family,

Former WBA heavyweight Bruce Selden is having a tough time living in a shelter in Newark, New Jersey. I carefully improved his life every day, arranged a community worker for Selden so that she could help him, and once Selden was living in a stable place, I would arrange a coaching job for him at my gym, or a coaching job at another gym.

I arranged this fundraiser for Selden so that he could stay in an apartment for a while until we helped him find a place to live, better than a Newark shelter.

The shelter was like a "slum", Selden didn't drink or take drugs, he just had bad luck and went bankrupt. Selden is a typical boxer and I'm sorry, but the poor financial management didn't help his world championship journey.

I humbly beg you to do everything in your power to let Selden sleep peacefully in a bed free of lice so that he doesn't have to open a single eye at night. Whatever help, I thank you, Selden thank you.

Nicknamed the "Atlantic Express Train", Selden is known for his dexterity and sharp punches, and the most well-known match is the 1996 match against the famous Mike Tyson, when Selden was the defending champion, and his performance was astounding, and after receiving what Tyson called "Phantom Punch", Selden lost the battle, which lasted only 109 seconds and ended. Slow motion shows that Tyson's punch did not hit and hit solidly, but Selden surrendered his weapon, and after the game he got the $5 million appearance fee as he wished, perhaps Selden thought: Just get the honorarium, why get beaten!
