Today is an official holiday in Thailand, an important traditional festival of Fo religion--- the Summer Festival, also known as the Summer Settlement.
The Festival of Summer Keeping originated from the ancient custom of indian monks and nuns to stay in peace during the rainy period.
〇What is the summer settlement?
From April 15 to July 15 every year, for a total period of 90 days, for a total of three months, during which the monks are not allowed to travel outside, they must gather together, adhere to the precepts, purify their deeds, concentrate on cultivation, and settle down in the name of Summer.
A "knot" is a knot. "Summer" is summer. "An" is an at peace. "Residence" is residence.
Usually, Brother Fo practices diligently, mostly on the side of the mountain, under the forest, or at the water's edge, at the edge of the mound, and meditates and settles down, because the indian summer floods often flood, Fo Tuo is compassionate, for the sake of the brothers' safety, specially made a gathering place to spend the summer, so it is called the Summer Settlement.
India's summer is humid, is the breeding season of snake insects and rat ants, in order to avoid the invasion of snakes and insects, and to prevent themselves from moving their feet, they must harm sentient beings, so they must be grounded and live in peace in summer.
During the end of the summer, for a total of ninety days, the disciples gathered together to practice together and encourage each other, and then the Tao karma would be easy to achieve.
〇 Monk Self-Indulgence Day
On the day after the ninetieth day of the summer, the monks must practice self-indulgence:
That is, to first self-examine the three kammas of body, mouth, and mind, have you committed them during the summer period?
The second time I asked the monks to show him whether he had committed any crimes in the process of seeing, hearing, and doubting in the course of his actions?
Let the masses reflect on themselves and accept the complaints of the monks, so as to show repentance, reform, and restore purity, and the famous monks will practice the Dharma. Therefore, this day is also called the Day of Monk's Self-Indulgence.
After practicing the Fa, the gathering of jiexia anju can be dissolved, and you can return to the place where you usually like to practice at the water's edge or under the forest, and you will not be bound by the jiexia anju, also known as "Xiexia".
