Chapter 25 of The White Deer Plain describes a plague unprecedented in the Guanzhong region.

Yang Shuji, a physician of the Chinese medical country: a hero who fought the "tiger" during the cholera disorder in Guanzhong in 1932

"Like a flood through the fields of lush rivers, like dark clouds filling the blue sky", it spread through all the villages on the original, making everyone tremble.

People who are sick first vomit up and down diarrhea, according to the book Chinese medicine Mr. Leng, this is called "two ends of the flower". After that, the eye sockets are sunken or even blind, and the face takes on a greenish color. After a few days, people are gone.

The plague lasted for several months, and the dead were buried every three to five minutes in the Village of Bailu, and the cries could not even arouse people's sympathy, and Bai Jiaxuan's daughter-in-law Xiancao died in this plague. The original people thought that this was the evil qi brought by Tian Xiao'e's ghost, and it was not until Bai Jiaxuan built a town demon tower that the plague passed.

The scene depicted in the novel "White Deer Plain" is the famous "Great Cholera in Guanzhong" in history in 1932. Of course, the way to quell this plague was not Bai Jiaxuan's town demon tower, but thanks to a young man who was also a fellow shaanxi countryman.

Because cholera was introduced to the mainland from abroad, according to its English (cholera) pronunciation, it was also translated as "tiger liela", then called "tiger plague".

In June 1932, starting from Tongguan, from east to west, the "Tiger Liela" broke out in Guanzhong and spread rapidly, gradually reaching north and south, about 53 counties, the number of sick people reached more than 500,000, and the number of people who died without treatment reached more than 1230,000.

In Shaanxi, a region with deep inland and closed information, the people's awareness of epidemic prevention and public health knowledge are extremely poor.

Coupled with the natural disaster of the great drought in Guanzhong in 1929, the people of Shaanxi, which was still full of food and clothing, were already exhausted, and the ensuing epidemic diseases followed in the shadows, which was chilling.

Ma Zhichao, a Xunyi man, recalled the situation when "Tiger Liela" infected the area:

At the turn of the autumn and summer of 1932, Li Mou, who was selling snacks in the city, suddenly fell ill and died on the same day, his wife and a son were killed that night, and then the baby in May was also killed. Thus infected by this alley, to the city and the city are all popular, the people come very quickly, there is no good doctor, the infected people are tied to death, there is nothing to do, only to hear the heavens and the earth, the sound of crying breaks the eardrums, the dead skeleton of the bare arm on the chest is seen everywhere, steamed by the sun, the smell is soaring.

From morning to night, the people seen in the neighborhood were pale, all with fear, one hand covering his nasal cavity and the other holding an incense watch, running east and west, asking for God's protection, some people hanging straw people, red pants, white bowls, and so on, which were really spectacles, the most injurable, the father carried his son's corpse, the son carried his father's coffin endlessly, and only sighed in his mouth: Heaven gave birth, or the cloud outsider poisoned the traitor in the well.

There are many words, there is no end to the discussion, the misery of their feelings is unbearable, and all kinds of sufferings are difficult to declare.

The huge destructive power brought by "Tiger Liela" shocked the world, and at a time when the funds were insufficient, the level of medical treatment was low, and the spread of the epidemic could not be controlled, it aroused a person's fighting spirit against the "tiger epidemic".

Yang Shuji, then president of the Eighteenth Army Hospital, was quite touched when he saw many compatriots die and die in the mouth of the "tiger". He lamented: "The tiger plague is worse than the flood beast", "My people eat the tiger".

Therefore, it resolutely petitioned the provincial government to set up an epidemic prevention office once and for all to eradicate the "tiger epidemic" through scientific and effective medical measures.

Yang Shuji's resoluteness was strongly supported by Yang Hucheng, then chairman of the Shaanxi Provincial Government, and instructed that "with regard to the prevention and control of the tiger epidemic, Mr. Yang Shuji should preside over it, and the money should be allocated by his private seal, and the employment should be mobilized by him, and all facilities in the province should be fully assisted."

A vigorous "fighting tiger" epidemic prevention work prepared and presided over by Yang Shuji was thus vigorously launched.

Yang Shuji was entrusted with a heavy responsibility as the director of the Shaanxi Epidemic Prevention Department, responsible for coordinating epidemic prevention, publicity, vaccine purchase and many other work. Although Yang Shuji shouldered a heavy responsibility, he resolutely refused to receive a salary of a penny. He said: "Good steel should be used on the blade of the knife, and an extra piece of money may save one more person." ”

In this way, under Yang Shuji's clean and clean style of two sleeves, no one dared to cheat in the prevention and control of the "tiger epidemic" and enrich his own pockets. In less than a year, the effect of preventing and controlling the "tiger plague" was remarkable, and the "tiger plague" that made the Shaanxi compatriots smell gradually disappear from people's vision.

In 1933 alone, five epidemic prevention personnel were sent to northern Shaanxi to prevent and control tiger plague, and an infectious disease hospital was established, which received more than 700 people with infectious diseases every year.

Organized a roving medical team, more than two months of diagnosis and treatment reached 1037 people, issued a weekly epidemic prevention weekly, printed a variety of epidemic prevention leaflets and leaflets, held 3 epidemic prevention training classes, 2 epidemic prevention personnel in each county, covering 71 counties in the province (at that time, the province had a total of 94 counties).

For the provincial relief committee and the Buddhist society,300 people's rehabilitation centers for disaster victims are dispatched twice a week.

In the summer of June, 10,000 bottles of "tiger disease" vaccine, 157 bottles of rat vaccine, 12,000 bottles of emergency water, as well as thunderbolt scatter and dysentery dispersion were purchased, and distributed to counties with the focus on the East Road.

The Army Hospital, the Provincial Hospital, and the Red Cross Hospital were entrusted with the responsibility of tiger disease vaccination and pox vaccination in the four districts of the provincial capital.

By 1936, the Shaanxi Epidemic Prevention Office, founded by Yang Shuji, effectively prevented the outbreak of cyclic cholera in a five-year pandemic by organizing public and private hospitals and various medical and health institutions to take on the task of injecting the "tiger epidemic" vaccine free of charge with the people to avoid diseases.

At this point, the "Great Cholera in Guanzhong" was completely eliminated, and gradually became a dusty past in the memory of The Father of Sanqin. Yang Shuji, who stepped forward to "fight the tiger", not only solved the "tiger epidemic" once and for all, but also established a long-term epidemic prevention system in Shaanxi under his impetus, which promoted the enlightenment of modern rural health science in shaanxi at that time when the people of Shaanxi believed in science and broke superstition.

If you just think that Yang Shuji is just a healer's benevolence, it may be a little too underestimated.

After the initial defeat, Yang Shuji was not discouraged and gave up, but chose to cross to Japan and follow in the footsteps of the revolutionary leader.

During his studies in Japan, Yang Shuji became acquainted with Huang Xing, Song Jiaoren, Hu Hanmin and others, and was appointed by the Tokyo headquarters of the League to participate in the preparations for the Huanghuagang Uprising in Guangzhou in 1911.

After the failure of the Huanghuagang Uprising, according to the instructions of the headquarters of the League, Yang Shuji accepted the assignment of the leader of the Shaanxi League, Jing Beimu, and returned to Shaanxi in the summer of 1911 to instigate the Xi'an Uprising.

In the subsequent work, Yang Shuji was assigned to be responsible for connecting the telegraph communications between Xi'an and Hankou, and under extremely difficult conditions, he led the troops to complete the telegraph communication work on time, and finally restored the telecommunications communication line between the military government and the headquarters of the Wuchang uprising, making a great contribution.

At the time when the war in Binzhou was in full swing, in order to effectively block the Qing army, 700 warriors were personally recruited and served as bomb teams to fight on the front line, which made great contributions to turning the tide of the war.

Until the abdication of the Qing Emperor Puyi in 1912 and the success of the revolutionary cause led by Sun Yat-sen, Yang Shuji had the idea of studying medicine to save the people. In September 1912, Yang went to Japan again, and the following year he was admitted to Chiba Medical College.

After the "April 12" incident in 1927, Zheng Ziyi, a Shaanxi student at the Whampoa Military Academy, and others were arrested in Guangzhou for carrying out anti-Chiang Kai-shek activities. He personally went to Guangzhou and released Zheng Ziyi and others from prison on bail through his friend Chen Mingshu, who was the chairman of Guangdong Province.

In 1932, during the "Great Cholera in Guanzhong", Yang Shuji appeared in the opening chapter of this article.

To this end, Mr. Yu Youren specially inscribed a couplet of "Healing the Sick and Healing the Heart, Saving people and saving the world and saving the country", which was presented to President Yang Shuji, comprehensively and pertinently evaluating Yang Shuji's outstanding contributions in the medical cause.

Because of the meticulous treatment of anti-Japanese fighters, the 310 wounded soldiers of the fourth station of the First Branch of the Eighteenth Army Hospital of the Ministry of Military Affairs were very moved, and extracted the four big characters of "Medical National Doctor" from the couplet inscribed by Yu Lao, carved them into a plaque, and gave them to Mr. Yang Shuji on New Year's Day in 1938.
