Created by designer Yoshiki Matsuyama for Japanese brand Ambientec, cachalot lamps have abstract, poetic shapes inspired by the body of whales.
Matsuyama said the Cachalot lamps are portable and rechargeable, emitting a soft, warm light that "makes time seem to slow down," like "whales moving in the depths of a silent sea."

"I find the shape of these marine creatures fascinating: powerful and fluid, but also warm and gentle," Matsuyama said. "It is this kind of sweet majesty that I hope to convey through Cachalot."
Matsuyama's interpretation of the whale's form is symbolic and evocative, rather than literal, with the tubular LED device housed in a wide shell made of transparent or dark gray acrylic and mounted on a die-cast zinc base.

Ambientec recommends placing small ambient lights on bookshelves or surrounded by other objects on coffee tables.
To further strengthen the relationship between objects and the ocean, Ambientec has committed to donating 1% of Cachalot's annual sales to charities that support marine environmental protection programs.
