Traveling, in your own room?
Looks contradictory,
It's not actually a conflict.
It is also to avoid the noise and urgency of the external world,
It is also a spiritual escape place that belongs to the individual alone.
Own room
Embark on a journey
Take a closer look at every item in the room,
You can imagine it
How is it made,
How to come to your home and become a part of it,
How does it affect your daily life and mood every moment?
This journey begins here.
Maybe before the pandemic arrived,
We thus did not expect to be deprived of our liberty for so long,
If you have forgotten the joy of travel,
Take a walk around your room.
Canal house

Amsterdam, Netherlands

This house is located next to the Amstel Canal,
It was founded in 1675.
Over the years, it has been reduced to almost rubble, so it took more than two years to renovate. The new interior decoration highlights the different areas through the colors, giving people a new understanding of this historic building.
△pic©EwoutHuibers
The kitchen is visually connected to the study above through a gray oak wall, which also constitutes a beautiful entrance to the upper rooms. This gray continues in the living room, but is applied to the wall of acoustic insulation fabric.
△pic©EwoutHuibers
The ground floor kitchen space consists of white concrete, light-coloured walls, a custom oak island and a dining table. As you walk through here, you will find a hidden room marked by a green glass mass, which is fully equipped with an en-suite bathroom and access to the garden.
Behind the revolving book wall in the living room is another hidden area with a completely calm blue, green and white finish for reading or relaxing.
△pic©EwoutHuibers
Upstairs is the sleeping area, which is designed to exude comfort and luxury, providing a hotel-like experience.
△pic©EwoutHuibers
The master bedroom features an original roof structure separated from the bathroom by a mirror space that encloses both the stairwell and the shower area. The shower wall features a two-way mirror and can see the canal directly.
The adjacent bathroom features a traditional Japanese bathtub and a separate wooden vanity. All new, identifiable interventions were tailored to this 17th-century home, making it fully adapted to the existing environment, while also improving the quality of the house and preparing it for the next generation of renewal.

673 Weihai Road,
Sandwiched between Minli High School and Sun Apartments,
A small, four-storey apartment with no name.
When we first visited the site, it was as if we had broken into an amber space where time had stopped passing, a small apartment of 60 square meters, completely preserving traces of history from the 1930s to the early 1990s.
△pic©GaoYiqing
Although the main entrance of the apartment is unremarkable, there is a hole in the door:
White and green mosaic mosaic ground,
Quaint and beautiful cast iron escalator railing,
One-piece poured hydromassite base...
Every detail, every arc, reminds you of the modern old days here and the remarkable level of construction craftsmanship of that era.
△pic©GaoYiqing
We kept all the top corner lines in the living room and bedroom. The original top corner link connecting the kitchen and living room had to be carefully removed and moved to a new location. The bedroom ceiling, the beautiful plaster fossil, we cleaned it with care and care like a relic, and nothing else was done.
△pic©GaoYiqing
We found that all the doors had been painted repeatedly, and under one layer of paint, there was often another layer of paint hidden.
We polished the door again and again according to the requirements, and the final product, some part of the complete retention of the surface paint, some are the mottled texture composed of the lower layer and the lower layer of paint, and the whole door is like a complete stratum slice, revealing the historical changes of the house.
△pic©GaoYiqing
The kitchen and hallway floors are made of handmade bricks, also to match the historic feel of the house as much as possible.

The afternoon sun shines into the ruined grounds, and the dappled walls exude charm and charm between the flow of light and shadow, as if it is a living limb, but has experienced the baptism of the times.

An open, village-like living space.
If you can peek up at this apartment from the roof, you'll see a large glass fence with three intimate rooms spread out like small boxes, dividing large open spaces into some common areas. That's why Gisbert Pöppler called his design for this rooftop pavilion a "village."
△pic©RobertRieger
The combination of these materials adds a warm and reassuring atmosphere to the otherwise deserted building. For example, the entrance area is made of Red Lacquered Wood Panels in the Renaissance style, which are more lustrous against the silky white matte linoleum surface of the sideboard.
△pic©RobertRieger
Teak wood is used in the office and guest room areas, while the walls of the kitchen area and living room are decorated with light limestone reliefs. The stones were hand-picked by the owners during their trip to Italy from a quarry near Verona and then processed into relief wall decorations together with the design team.
△pic©RobertRieger
The use of low ceilings is mainly considered for the needs of the structure, and it is often thought that the metal elements will give people a feeling of desertion, but in fact, the large area of stainless steel ceiling visually increases the height of the space through hazy reflections, while creating a cozy and warm atmosphere. This impression is reflected again on the glass tabletop designed by Azucona.
△pic©RobertRieger
Painting the entire ceiling of the roof in a deep blue-purple color is a very wise choice. The continuous ceiling acts in the same way as the oak floor that runs through the house, providing a solid visual support for the space, which is also an effect that light ceilings cannot achieve.
△pic©RobertRieger
Another important design element is the repeated occurrence of grooves and skirting boards along the walls, according to which the height of all cabinets and the position of the doors are determined; The plane that appears in the middle is based on the cubic countertop of the kitchen.
△pic©RobertRieger
This invisible mesh helps to connect different materials and guide people's vision in the apartment.
All the furniture in the bathroom is tailor-made, the sink is made of lava stone from Etna, and the surface is decorated with cracked glaze with pigeon eggshell white on it; The walls of the bathtub are made in the form of niches and laid in dramatic South American marble. Gisbert Pöpper achieves this combination of various materials and surfaces with different textures and bold colors.

2 to 1, is it a decrease, or an increase?
In the eyes of designers, some levels of simplification can actually lead to richer changes.
△ pic© Liming
In this case, we reduced the original 2 bathrooms of 4 square meters to a bathroom, but let the family of three have a more comfortable experience.
△ pic© Liming
For today's young people, the open kitchen is not just a form, but a way of life, more of an interactive space between family and friends.
△ pic© Liming
Through a "large installation" two pathways are formed, one is the moving line of the living room into the master bedroom, and the other is the climbing line of the children's fun space, at the same time, the interior of the curved cabinets on both sides is the storage space. The bedroom is made of cotton and linen and wood throughout to create a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.
△ pic© Liming
In this era when there is no shortage of materials, spiritual satisfaction has become the expectation of more people for home. The space we have created for this family of three is closely centered on "fun", relying on the three major life functional areas of living, cooking, and children's activities to extend in depth.

The Riverside Tower, where the project is located, is a high-rise building designed by Leon Stynen and Paul DeMeyer in the early 70s, which sits at the bend of the Skalt River, just a stone's throw from antwerp city centre.
△pic©MatthijsvanderBurgt
Located on the fourteenth floor of the building and home to Bram VanCauter, the founding architect of Okami, the project has been renovated and remodeled indoors today into a brutalist duplex apartment that complements the building's architectural style.
△pic©MatthijsvanderBurgt
The apartment originally had five bedrooms, and during the renovation, Okami Offices removed the walls of the bedrooms and stripped away all the decorative layers on the walls as well as the ceiling, exposing the beautiful textured concrete to the space.
After the rough concrete had been sandblasted and the dust had settled, the one-bedroom, 230-square-meter open duplex became the new home of Doris and their dog señor Peña.
△pic©MatthijsvanderBurgt
The peach-colored resin liquid floor plate balances with the rough concrete texture, while the concrete walls become the ideal backdrop for the owner Doris's art collection, and the existing nail grooves and hooks on the concrete define the specific location of each piece of art.
The few walls in the interior are made of brick and cement, and small stones are mixed with cement, which makes the walls look more real and interesting.
△pic©MatthijsvanderBurgt
The Riverside Building can be seen as an avant-garde shared house or a vertical street where all neighbors know each other, sharing common spaces such as laundry, car wash, and spacious entrance halls, overlooking the same public garden, and enjoying the interaction between social neighbors.
The apartment houses the Doris Art Gallery as well as folklore, enough to host their loved ones and friends for a night out and give them the perfect Riverside Mansion experience.

Nanjing, China

This apartment is located in a high-rise residential building in Nanjing.
The north side is close to the Qinhuai River and the remnants of the Millennium Stone City.
The couple is retiring and wants to transform the existing standard three-bedroom, two-bedroom apartment into a home suitable for the two of them in their later years.
△pic©LuzImages
In the design, the enclosed room was deliberately broken, and the three bedrooms and two halls were transformed into one room and one garden, from the original linear streamline to a circular streamline.
The boundaries of the living space are broken, and the winding corridors are walked, and the frame view of the windows outside the inner window makes the view rich and changeable. The design combines functionality with walkways, and it is used to have a living experience in a Chinese garden. In the post-pandemic era, people spend more time at home, and interesting home spaces become particularly important.
△pic©LuzImages
A range of features have been optimized for the habits and emotional needs of the elderly, bringing a fresh experience to their retirement.
They can raise flowers and grass in the courtyard-like multi-functional living room, or play somatosensory sports, read and take a nap in the book alley, or soak their feet in front of the north bay window while enjoying the scenery of the Qinhuai River. The center of the home revolves around dining and cooking, making it easy for homeowners and friends to socialize.

The old wooden floors of the original apartment were reused and became part of the new home. The old floor is an African disc bean solid wood floor with a dark red sealing paint on the surface. After more than twenty years of use, the surface is dull and scratched.

A place of rest
Madrid, Spain

In the wake of the new climate regime and the fossil fuel crisis,
Home spaces should be updated in light of new usage patterns and environmental awareness.
“TheDayAfterHouse”
It was under this theme that the renovation of an apartment in Madrid was projected.
△pic©JoséHevia
First, designers plan the function and layout of the house according to a thermal gradient, which is the opposite of the traditional combination of rooms and corridors.
The layout of the new scheme takes into account the climatic and environmental characteristics of each space, which are like "onions", layered and progressive. This leaves no corridors in the apartment, making room for other parts and saving energy.
△pic©JoséHevia
The closer you get to the center of the house, the more insulated the space is and the less extra energy is required.
This diverse, climate-based layout emerges in Madrid's continental climate of energy scarcity and hot summers and cold winters, unifying function, climate and efficiency.
△pic©JoséHevia
Secondly, low-carbon discharge materials are used in the space, which are basically wood and natural cork. The apartments are generally north-facing, so there is a lack of solar energy applications. This makes the choice of materials smaller, and architects need to find high-performance insulation materials to reduce energy losses, while at the same time requiring it to have less thermal inertness to achieve rapid heating.
△pic©JoséHevia
Again, for economic and energy reasons, the house was only remodeled in half, retaining the other half, including the windows, thus creating an indoor terrace without the need to install air conditioning. Finally, the combination of a wood stove and a folding door system expands the availability of the space for the rest of the year.
△pic©JoséHevia
At first, the extremely low budget seemed like a limitation, but then it became a positive factor, and the owner got two rooms for the price of one room. The material of the "Summer House" is the opposite of the "Winter House", and the walls, ceiling and insulation materials on the ground are replaced by cement mortar surfaces, which are hot inert and can be energized from the indoor air in the summer.

Soholoft apartment is well structured but looks dated.
The transformed space highlights the typical features of loft apartments, where we open the space so that the central wooden beams and iron columns are exposed and all painted surfaces are removed, highlighting the material itself.
△pic©ddreps
The kitchen is open to the rest of the space and the area is enlarged. Walnut furniture juxtaposes the corner of the kitchen into the living room, forming a media wall and a hidden entrance to the guest bedroom.
Walnut wood is complemented by black cabinets embedded above the pool and island platform. The concrete countertops create an industrial feel and are juxtaposed with textured marble tailgates.
△pic©ddreps
Rough wooden beams provide a reference for the décor of the rest of the apartment, and recycled wood of similar colors is applied to the skirting feet, masks and window sills to create a uniform look. Separated from the living room by a set of custom black steel sliding pocket doors, the vintage laminated glass panels on the doors are both translucent and private.
△pic©ddreps
The bedrooms are still made of walnut and black woodwork, with built-in headboards at the back of the bed and hollowed out on the sides to expose the brick walls at the back. In the bathroom, a separate white bathtub is the focal point of the space, which is located on the raised floor of the hidden pipe.
△pic©ddreps
In addition, the bathroom has an enclosed glass-enclosed shower, creating a damp room above the ground. The bathroom continues the material of the rest of the apartment, and the suspended walnut dresser features a custom concrete sink. The entire space is made of black steel luminaires, echoing the new steel doors and exposed iron columns, and there is an industrial atmosphere in the whole space.

Originally part of the large garden next door, the plot was constructed by a turquoise façade that was neither naturally owned nor fully man-made.
Here, the staircase can also be used as an extension of the floor, or connected to chairs, shelves, tables and kitchens, it has a dynamic function, can be adapted to adapt, and constantly echoes the dynamics of the body.
△pic©KenyaChiba
In order to maximize the height of the floors and create a sense of expanse in small volumes throughout the building, the staircase was deliberately placed in the center of the building in a three-story arrangement, with plans to lay thinner 45 mm thick floors on both sides, staggered in width and height.
△pic©KenyaChiba
When you ascend the stairs, the thin floor is always with the counter and the bench, sometimes appearing in front of your eyes, sometimes disappearing, so that the relationship between the occupants is also changing at any time.
△pic©KenyaChiba
Each room is intimately intertwined with the scale of physical perceptuality, as if it were near and far, as far as it was near, and it was interesting.
That staircase, which sometimes becomes like a ceiling or a partition wall, creates a three-dimensional, whirlwind connected space that is both segmented and continuous.

"Traveling in Your Own Room"
A French aristocratic officer, Samiye. De Meest
In the book he wrote, he told people:
When the body is imprisoned and free,
What can be done and how should I think?
He let "himself" stay in the house,
And their own souls soar freely in the outside world.
houses, houses,
In fact, it comes with narrative and story sense -
One wall and one ground, one vertical and one horizontal,
Material combination, color matching,
Decorative use, light and shade,
Functional zoning, moving line layout,
Those designs that have been designed with heart,
All you see is what a good journey looks like.
Walk into a room like that and you'll feel it
When the sun rises, the scenery all over the home will be lit up,
Little bits of life are scattered around the desk and on the dining table.
Entrance, balcony, kitchen, bedroom
You can always find the poetry of the encounter of mountains and rivers, one weight and one weight.
